RMWeb Advertising

One of the things I like about Westernthunder is the lack of advertising which seems to be invading our lives on a constant basis. I’m sure a few members of this site are also members of RMWeb and if you want to avoid the invasive advertising you have to subscribe to a paid subscription. At the moment on RMWeb an irritating screen pops up that isn’t advertising anything but just shows videos of sea turtles and Caterpillars. Is it just me who is being targeted or have other RMWeb users experienced the same thing. Let’s hope Westernthunder doesn’t go down the same root. The only good side I can think that the invasive advertising has had is that it has increased the Westernthunder membership. Keep up the good work Westernthunder.

RMweb is a completely different "animal" and I believe that the issues you describe are not things which Andy York would wish to be features of the place, which I think he has explained at various points over on RMweb.

Increasing membership isn't a particular objective from Western Thunder's point of view, and I would guess that if it got too "busy" it would end up facing all sorts of issues.

The person here who really knows about all the technicalities is Adrian.

It gets worse if you klick on the cookie preferences and take out all the tracking ones some of the adverts are, shale we say, not appropriate to anyone who is not under the age of 18 and not of a broad mind. We shall say no more!

I've stopped looking at RMWEB, I did enquiry about the mass of advertising spoiling viewing and had a rather abrupt reply, pay up or ...... off.
I'm more than happy with a few donations that I give to other forums but RMWEB is all about money.

RMweb is not "all about money" and this is not the place to bash other forums. And I refute your account of the response you received from Andy York.

RMweb is a very different animal to Western Thunder as has been alluded to on other threads. It is also part of a larger corporate group whose objectives may well be financial, and there is nothing wrong with that. Andy York's objectives and desires are quite likely to not always be the same as the larger corporate group.

For what it is worth, I am an RMweb Gold member and the browsing experience that I have is absolutely fine.

There is a vast wealth of information on RMweb.
About 75% of my railway themed Google searches will bring up at least one RMweb result, even more if it is an image search.
For me, a few pesky adverts is a small price to pay.

I routinely block cookies and adware and have no issues with using RMWeb.
So do I but RMWeb has so many of the trivial, 'soundbite' posts the modelling is all but lost. I find RMWeb too big and difficult to find interesting material amongst the dross comments. One can put up with a few 'clever' responses but they are endemic (epidemic?) on RMWeb.
I had those annoying video pop-ups a few weeks ago but they have gone now. I sent a message to Andy York and said they were a real turn-off for viewing RMWeb.

I feel a bit sorry for Andy York who does a wonderful job on RMWeb and seems to get the finger pointed at him when it comes to all the invasive advertising. It’s the publisher who needs to sort it out and this should not be the place to bash another railway forum which don’t think anyone has done. I think of RMWeb as the Railway Modeller of forums and Westernthunder as the MRJ of forums.

The advertising cheesed me off so much that I haven't used RM web for about a year.
Have i missed anything?

I'm not sure where this is going beyond finding that some prefer Thunder to RMweb and that some see a value in both, in spite of (or maybe because of) their very different feel. Unlike some I'm happy to use it without my adblock on; I'm not a gold member and it seems a bit unsporting to deprive the site of advertising revenue just because one can't be bothered to click on the ad to shut it down. Small price to pay.

John,

I think so. RMWeb has many threads that I enjoy.

From truly epic N gauge, to deliberately old fashioned 0 gauge, via some inspirational S7 wagon building, and some exquisite 4mm stuff too.

of course, these may not float your boat, we’re all different

I will just quote this, from the "About" Tab at the top of this Forum.
We fully recognize that there are other Model Railway forums and have no qualms about mentioning them directly particularly if you have a link to some good modelling. However this is not the place to bring any grievances or politics from those forums, we're here for the modelling not for having a moan about other forums.
Bold added. I suggest this topic is locked & closed, as Neil says, it's going nowhere really.
