Tales from The Room of Doom. Dipping a toe in various bucolic backwaters.

good! How?

thx
Simon

Hi Simon.

I normally spray the trackwork using Humbrol Acrylic No.29, Dark Earth aerosol. In the past, I've then weathered the sleepers using various weathering powders. This can take quite a while. I think Ewe took roughly a fortnight. Sheep Dip took even longer.

As I have a short time frame for this build, I thought I'd try a different approach.

Once again, the base colour is the Humbrol Dark Earth aerosol. Once dry, I then painted each sleeper individually using thinned humbrol acrylics, Nos 94 brown yellow, 173 track colour and 186 brown. I just picked these at random from from the paint box. I painted some in 'neat' colours, others were a blend, some were washed over after drying.

All very haphazard but I continued until it looked about right.

So, such is the result, this may well now be the revised way of how I finish the track. Still to add are the colour to the rail sides and chairs and then some weathering powders here and then. However, I'll do this once the DAS clay, which will form the ground between the tracks, is down, dry and painted, ready for the adding of grass, yard surface etc.

Hope this helps.

Rob,

thanks, I think it looks really effective, did you mask the rails?

I used an airbrush to “rust” the rails on PD, but I didn’t think to try to colour the sleepers individually. I might have a play. It’ll be one of those “one day” things…. There seem to be more and more of them.

cheers

Thank you very much for that detailed explanation Rob. You're very kind in sharing it with us. Those sleepers look absolutely amazing. I'm going to give you technique a go (i.e. flagrantly copy) ... I've bookmarked it for future reference.

Morning Simon.

I spray all the track, rails and sleepers, with the dark earth. The rails therefore, are currently dark earth.

This is, in effect, my primer. I'll use weathering powders on the rails and chairs and seal the whole thing with matt varnish once I'm happy. I'm 50/50 on adding anything to the sleepers as I'm really happy with the finish.

Hi David.

I'm glad you find it of use. It's a relatively quick fix and one which does improve the look of the peco track.

Evening all.

A brief update. Finally started getting the layout ready for Nailsea. Ballast laid on Saturday. Green stuff added Sunday. Spent most of today sorting the running out and generally tidying up after all the messy stuff over the last two days. This is the current state of play......ish

There's still a lot to do but it should look okay for Friday's trip to set up at the show.

Nice bush.

Hi Rob

Looks great, the choice of back scene does seem to make a lot of difference to layouts.

Also you have squeezed a fair bit into only 26cm wide and kept a feeling of space.

Can I ask why you dropped the idea of having a platform at the back?
