Both are at their peak, and I don’t foresee much else being added.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight....:)).
Absolutely Jim ;) ....we've all fallen for that old "I only need a loco & half a dozen freight cars" line... :))
I'm at 50 operational* freight cars currently, plus 2 or 3 in bits/non operational as yet, plus 6 caboose and a 'heritage' coach.
I know that the oval of track on my layout takes about 35 cars all the way round with both ends very nearly joining up.

*'Operational' means able to be used on the layout. A few are fully finished, most need weathering to varying degrees & small details adding.

Okay, so I know this could induce a 'you protest too much' response, but my statement is very much one of honesty - and it comes down to a single factor that there isn't much else there that I actually want.....that is available!

Starting off the collection with a Glacier Park Models, set a very high standard to follow and that has no-doubt limited some 'potential' purchases....infact it's left me wondering whether I should even part company with the Sunset MK-5:

IMG_0468.JPG

It's a nice enough model, but lacks the detail of the GPM locos. New tender trucks, painting all the wheels/motion and a liberal weathering could improve things, but it's still would not be anywhere near the standard GPM set.

Two other loco's I've looked at include a PSC SP T-31 4-6-0 (Photo from Brass Trains):

One was on offer for about $850 this year at March-O-Meet, however model does come with some well known issues, the first being that when manufactured, DONGJIN based their drawing around the gauge being 4ft 8.5inches rather than 5ft (to match all other OW5) locos, so its firstly slightly too large, and secondly doesn't ride well on OW5 track. From memory there was only a few locos manufactured with this mistake, and they have subsequently been known as Q Scale locos. Thankfully the vendor alerted me to these issues and I declined the purchase. Nice model however and would have probably fitted in my fleet quite well.

Another potential which I probably should have snapped up a few years ago is the Glacier Park Northern Pacific S-4:

A vendor at 2024 and 2025 March O Meet had one for sale, and in retrospect, yes I should have purchased it - if it had been there this year, I probably would have, but alas it wasn't. It's not SP and I don't even know whether the NR would have had much of an interface with the SP, but it's a gorgeous model, as you would expect from Glacier Park. If one came up at a decent price, then yes I could be tempted.....but I'm not pursuing one.

Back to SP, a prototype I've grown interest in the Twelve-wheeler 4-8-0 set of locos they had, and Precision Scale have produced a model of the TW-8 class:

Screenshot 2026-05-06 at 07.59.45.png

If a decent one came up then I'd debate it, but again its not one being actively pursued.

I do have a number of 'devils' sat on my shoulder who send me links to items for sale, including Sunset E8s.....and a pressure group even formed in Chicago this year to get me to purchase an SP 4-8-2 Mt-2 that was up for a good price.....but I resisted their best combined efforts! :D

The only other loco that is on the agenda is the SP P-10 Pacific:
Screenshot 2026-05-06 at 08.10.42.png
PSC did produce a factory painted model and they do pop up on the second hand market from time to time, so I'm playing the waiting game. 3rd Rail are producing an all new model, but with it retailing at circa $2600, there needs to be a serious devaluation of the dollar for me to order one.

I guess the only other option to increase the fleet would be if any of the other releases of the GPM locos cam up for a decent price.....yeah I wouldn't mind another 2-8-0 with a different tender and potentially the snow plow fitted.....but chances of one coming up are very low.

So.....apart from the above there aren't really any other locos that have been manufactured that I really want, and unless Jimmy Booth decides to revitalise GPM models and start producing more RTR SP locos (that would be the dream), there won't be any new additions to the ever declining O scale market. Even diesel wise, there aren't any other prototypes that interest me, with the exception of the KM4000, which would really be out of time period modelled.

So....roll on E-bay listings materialising for a S-4, TW-8 and P-10 at ridiculously low prices, and me adding to this thread saying 'oh look what I've just purchased'.....

Cheers,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,
I hear you as to the quailty of Glacier park models,i keep looking at the one Ellis Clarke has. (but not at that price, nearly 2 grand..!!) Then i look at the Sunset models M-9 he has also, that i almost went for but then this dropped in my lap...with a little wallet prising... IMG_20260511_215545.jpg
Much more suitable for me,an Oriental SW1 which is already conveted to Proto 48 and painted...just the small dilema of do i keep it as is or put it in tiger stripes ....
Cheers,
Brian.

Hi Brian,

The GPM loco that EC has for sale is priced way too high, and in my opinion doesn't have the nicest tender attached to it. I paid a lot less for my GPM 2-6-0, but that was a case of right place (Chicago), right time (March-0-Meet) to see/buy it. I even think the Sunset 2-6-0 EC has is on the high end of the spectrum pricewise, which no doubt reflects why they are both still up for grabs.

Looks like the SW-1s first came to the SP in 1939 where the livery your loco has was soon applied. Tiger Stripe was applied in the early '50's so you have two options....factor your time frame modelled by which livery the loco should be in....or buy another and have one of each! :D Not forgetting some of them there loaned to Pacific Electric, and received their livery, so you have a trio of options.....!

Cracking model though - and of a prototype that could fit my era of SP modelling......but I'm not tempted to start looking for one.....honestly I'm not.....not one bit.....

If you do go for a repaint, let me know if any specific decals are required, I have a 'strategic supply' in my possession from a certain other member of this forum!

Yes the GPM model is way to much and i think that it's probably around the new price too .(though i could wrong!.)
Interestingly though,Trainz.com also has two Sunset models for sale that i've keep my eye on.
One is around £800.with a whale back tender, the other for £500.but has a Reading tender..!!!.Anyhow it's all moote as i'd want to convert one to P48...

On the SW1,the tiger stripe scheme came out in about 46' with the loco's lettered 'Southern Pacific Lines' not sure when they dropped the 'Lines' though. I did also look at lettering the loco for the Pacific Electric and putting trolley poles on it,would make for and eye cathing loco..

Cheers,
Brian.

That’s the dream! Although maybe a bit more scenery….

Always liked Jim Harper’s SP/SN railroad - although he never ran very long trains on it, the scenery very much made the railroad blend in to the bigger picture.

Cheers,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Yes, Jim Harper's layout was a cracking layout and as you say the scenery made it,even if the trains were short.
But given all that i quite liked the Sacramenton Northen part of the layout...

Brian.
