7mm Withyn Reach ... still alive and well!!

What a terrible shame. This was one of the small layouts that got me thinking O gauge a few months ago.
That said, it would be interesting to see what you come up with to replace it...

It is rather hefty.... six foot long makes it a bit awkward too, but it's the weight that's the real problem...
Jordan,

Can you persuade a friend to help you move it? And is this going to the loft for storage between outings, for storage long term, or to be set up and played with?

If you will be able to operate it in the loft, then get a friend to help you. Likewise, if it is for long-term storage, securely wrap it in thick polythene sheets and similarly get it up there. If you will be taking it up and down repeatedly, start a new layout!

I still have Shell Island gathering dust on a shelf under Morfa. I couldn't and still can't bring myself to part with it;
Please don't: it has inspired too many people, and is also a useful background for photos, etc. Besides, if you found yourself less able to get up the stairs (e.g. a broken leg, or somesuch) you could have it brought downstairs to play with during convalescence!
Actually I'm maybe arguing to decide with the heart rather than the head.
Yes, and I hope Jordan follows suit.

14 years ago I disposed of a layout to a friend: it had served its purpose, and neither my head nor my heart wanted to keep it - it would otherwise have gone in the bin. But the layout is still going strong, albeit extended and largely rebuilt, because it suits the new owner.

Hey Jordan,

If you can wait until the end of the week I'll give you a lift. I'm going to be in the Cosford/Telford area Thurs/Fri and hopefully moving to Telford from Aug onwards (if I get this new post that is) :D

Now, now chaps play nice :D I'm sure come Guildex time my inbox will be full of people looking for the proverbial inn! :)) Anyhoo not much choice in the matter really as the Quarters at RAF Cosford are crape and the ones in Telford a lot better.

Well thanks for the resurgence of interest in this thread...

Neil is right - neither Obituary or progress to report; Withyn Reach is still in the Shed, although I have been having a good long look at it.
The problem really is one of location; There's room in the shed to set it up (when Schiller Point is put away!) but the stock is now up the loft. If it was set up in the loft I know I'd operate it more, although for it to work well up there it needs some modification - moving switches and point controls to the front, as it was designed for rear operation, and the traverser needs a re-think.
I'm not looking to take it out on Exhibition - too heavy and too long to get in the car easily as well - and that's presuming I had the time, and Weekend Passes from SWMBO....

"For" :- I still like it as a layout, and the premise behind it (Exchange Sidings) that means a quick turn-around of rolling stock doesn't look stupid, plus the excuse to run two locos & trains at once. Some bits of the scenery, such as the derelict building are, though I say it myself, some of the best bits of scenery I've ever done. A major "for" point is how long it's taken me to get the scenery to the stage it's at - starting all over again is somewhat daunting!!

"Against" is it's weight, even once it's up the loft, although I recently saw a neat, small three-legged trestle in Ikea which would be ideal - typically it was out of stock :headbang:.... I also would like to do a simple US - outline O Gauge Plank up there, for freight. Schiller Point will never go up the loft; it is much too bulky once set up. Withyn Reach is far too 'British' (even without the canal boat) to look right with US stock....
My trouble is too many interests and scales, and not enough time.... fortunately I know this affliction is very common amongst Forum members!!!

You sure, they haven't tasted your homemade beer, I used the last lot to clean the patio:))

I'd swing in favour of keeping it Jordan, even if you can't use it or work out what to do with it at present. If you can minimise the amount of space it takes to store it won't impact too much and you can just wait to see what happens. Its a lovely thing with some nice scenics (especially the derelict building  ) and I can understand why you don't want it to go.
Having been in a similar situation, I ended up getting rid of Dungeness Siding because I wanted my kitchen table back (foolish I know, I've only eaten at the table about three times  ) . 18 months down the line and having sold the TV and rearranged the lounge I now have space for the diorama....

I can't deny that storing the bugger for the 18 months would have been a Royal PITA, so if you can avoid that situation, just wait it out...who knows what will happen.

Steve (thinking about phoning the current owner up and see if he wants to sell Dungeness back to me  )

That was the three occasions when he had visitors and persuaded them to lift his bowl up from the kitchen floor...

(Coat got really quickly)

As it's just sat in the shed for a year or more, that's pretty much what I've been doing already!!:D
It's not taking up space; it's just not getting used:headbang: and I either need to keep it, or build something very similar (but lighter & more portable) especially if I really want to justify a Dapol 08 & Heljan 31 in the next year or so....

I can just see a Dapol 08 looking rather at home rearranging wagons on WR...

This Line Not to Close.

Today I've done a bit of work on this layout that, to all intents and purposes, removes the threat of closure that this line was under...:)
I've relocated the power feeds, section switches and point operating rods to the front of the board so that operation is now from the 'viewing' side. I just need to re-wire the feeds and switches now!
I will have to re-think the hidden sidings completely; it needs to be a tad shorter overall, and currently I'm thinking of doing a simpler two-track sector plate to replace the three-track traverser which has warped anyway, and would be very awkward to change to front operation. Once that's done, the loft (and more operating) awaits....

Keeping this layout means that a possible US-outline Freight Plank is again on the backburner, and also justifies my increasingly tenuous qualifications to be a member here at all.... :D

Good to hear that the axe has been postponed.
WR was always a favourite of mine from elsewhere 17 versions or so ago (multiple incarnations of the forum that is as against the layout)

Maybe you might like to leave such judgements to the WT forum en-masse.... you make models, you entertain, you encourage a degree of decorum - what else do you have to do?

..... what else do you have to do?
Well the general idea at the start (although the remit has been widened somewhat;)) was to have an interest in - and model, preferably in 7mm or larger - the Western Region of BR....

Have you thought about cassettes for the fiddle yard ? :)

Actually Phill you've just reminded me that I originally contemplated cassettes for this layout in the first place.
Mmm... might be worth thinking about again, that one...
