A Ratio 505 loco coaling stage has been built while the weather is too cold to work outdoors. Artificial lighting has added a colour cast. It is actually greyer than it looks...

I'm tagging on the coal staithes for the goods yard, which after two years have just been painted...

Awaiting bedding in, coal bags and the rest of the coalmans paraphernalia...

One outcome from the forum 'outage' was a return to coach building to keep the mind occupied. It was pleasantly surprising to discover some Comet roofs plus enough underframe bits to keep things motoring for a few weeks. After a 45-drawer unit containing coach bits was screwed back on the workroom wall, a start was made on building a GWR D121 corr. bk/3rd from stock etchings...

I leave things so long now before making a decision that the 7th February image can now be ignored! Did I really want to rip up the back shunt just to lay a small radius 'Y' point? No, it was just another winter whim.

With that sorted, I was able to weather-in the coal bunker and loco coaling stage...

Some years ago, I had some flintstone.... er..... tension lock coupling adapters etched, so they have been used to fit couplings to Hornby's pressed-steel bogies. The bolster screw takes the thrust....

A GWR C77 corridor third has been added using Comet roof, sides and ends on my underframes. Mainline produced this diagram years ago. A shame it hasn't been re-tooled to todays standards. These coaches has closer bogie centres than the D121 pictured in the previous post. The interior is loose and has slipped out of position....

These adapters look interesting, what's the benefit of transferring the"thrust" to the bogie pivot?

It just makes sound engineering sense to me. My brass adapter is glued to the bogie and strengthens the plastic bogie-pivot hole. Taken all round, it is preferable to a small brass coupling adapter glued to the end of the bogie.

I also suspect, in addition to @LarryG 's comment alluding to maintaining the force down the centre of the coach, the adapter plate also reduces any slop which may be present in the original bogie mountings and maybe reduce the propensity of the rear of the bogie to rock upwards into the floor of the coach from the pivot when pushed (something which I had noticed with certain manufacturers coaches about 40 years ago when I was modelling in 4mm scale).

Warm weather gave the chance to carry on with the scenery. As before, roughly shaped formers were screwed around the backsheet etc on which to glue sheets of vinyl grass....



Vinyl grass was attached to formers with Evostik-Impact adhesive. Crumpled newspapers were stuffed under the grass sheet and then the edge beside the track was glued down. A heatgun formed the contours...


This side the the bridge is on the scenic section, the scenery ending half way round the curve.....


Extending scenery so that it is much wider than the baseboard obviated the disaster of running out of scenery in long shots like this....

Latest view through the bridge. The buffer stops are now sitting level...


The vinyl greenery is quick and easy to form and is looking pretty basic without static grass. Mid grey ballast filed down to dust between the tracks...


A wider view of the corner. A rough roadway leads into the onetime loco shed area leads from bottom left and I plan to have a building or old carriage in use by the S&T gang. There remains much to do hereabouts.....

It makes all the difference visually carrying the scenery under the bridge and appears more natural and spacious with the light on the other side rather than disappear into a black hole purporting to be a bridge.

I was working on a bit of grass separation between the running line and the headshunt until I decided it was too cold out there......


This little fella turned up recently. Now looking suitably mucky.....
