7mm BR Grain Wagon Diag 1/270

Hi Tim,

I was just discussing the LNER predecessor not the other day. I don't think anyone does to be honest. I know Parkside do the timber version and this in 4mm but won't do a 7mm version. If you have any luck please let me know as I intended to scratch build some in the future,

Not sure Phil to be honest?

I agree Steph, these and the earlier LNER timber bodied versions will go nicely on HDN. I would have thought the body would be fairly straight forward to etch up? Maybe it could be done in plastikard as well? I know Geoff Kent has built both versions mentioned in 4mm with great success.

I was thinking plastikard on a suitable chassis.

Now I don't have any measurements to hand but grain wagons were unusual things with odd overhangs and inconvenient features like visible open framing at the ends of the solebars. The brakegear of course, is like nothing else... Didn't Jim Harris do a grain hopper? I remember that it got shot down to 4mm.

(but he is perfectly happy for links to pictures like this: http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brgrainrivetcgorivet/h1cc68369)

I think Jim Harris did do one now you mention it Adam, I've not seen one though. Here's a picture of the LNER predecessor which I'm hoping will be more straight forward than the later LMS and BR steel versions;

Incidentally I think three of these still survive at Louth, one day I shall go and measure up all being well. Do any of the steel versions still exist anyone?

Apologies for the hijack Tim

I'm wondering if a Parkside Grampus chassis could be modified? I think the design isn't that complicated for a plastikard build. A challenge to put something together on the laser perhaps. :)

I think the SR meat van Parkside do in 7mm (the one with all the funky vents) has a 10'6" wheelbase and won't be so far away over the headstocks either. Just a thought? A Grampus would be the right length over headstocks though. Are the W irons separate mouldings on those?

Mick - Having built up the LNER wooden van in 4mm very early in my kit bashing career if I wanted a second I would scratchbuild without hesitation. It's basically a big box van with a lump under the floor after all.

In 7mm, the W irons are separate on the Grampus. For £4 from Parkside, you've got a great start for the wagon I think.

Edit, having actually checked, the W irons are not separate

Ooops!

That's the second bollock I've dropped in a month - I'm rapidly running out of bollocks....(this is probably my third)

Tim (shall I get me' coat?)

PS (Edit) How come it asterisks the plural?

Don't grab your coat Tim! Just edit the original post accordingly and all will be well. I'm just flagging it up to save a grumpy message in due course. Given the great services Paul has done wagon modellers and historians over the years it's fair enough to accede to his request (and Paul Bartlett doesn't get as grumpy as some gallery owners I could mention).

How much?

I must confess to that being exactly my reaction on seeing it;) - but they do seem to have various items on special periodically.
For example you can currently get 2 of the 4mm versions for £38 and last year they had Midland tender engine loco kits on for £125

So while I wouldn't pay that for it I will look in regularly to see if I can pick one up a bit lot cheaper.

I wouldn't mind one or two of these, but the kit doesn't look that great or very much like the real thing. I think Rob, you've got your work cut out making a silk purse from that sows ear of a kit!
