Build a Wagon Competition - changes for 2018 including scratch built models

I have been barred from going next year - or rather, I have been informed that I shall be going to the Sandown Festival of Quilts and as that show is open on a Friday then I shall be able to attend the 2017 AGM. Going to Sandown is not such a bad thing for that is one of the quilting shows which is attended by Hobby Holidays
.I am grateful to Ian for taking the role of Master of Ceremonies thereby ensuring a smooth running of the 2016 competition. Our judge for this year was Ian Pope, well known authority on the Forest of Dean, who stepped in at very short notice.
I have a list of entrants by courtesy of Ian Roll and I shall contact those S7 members to ask about photo coverage of their entry. Any other photos of the day shall be gratefully received.
The subject for the 2017 competition was announced at the 2016 AGM and details of that competition shall be given in the next S7 Group Newsletter - for now, the subject is NCPS stock in service / traffic liveries (that is, vehicles in departmental livery are not eligible for the 2017 competition... their turn comes in the next couple of years). As the "Build a Wagon" competition is now an established feature of the S7 calendar the S7 Committee has decided to announce the subjects on a five year rolling basis... and the subjects for 2017 - 2021 are to be announced in the next group newsletter (and here at the same time).

And so to the winner of the 2016 Wagon Competition:- Ron Pitts with a delightful MR 8Ton van from a Slater's kit.
Runners up were:- Dave Nicholson was in 2nd place with a GWR 10T covered wagon (possibly a Peco kit). Third place was Ron Pitts with a LMS Diagram 1664 van from a Parkside kit.
This year the number of "entries" was eleven models from five members... prototypes included a LNWR brake van from a resin kit, a LMS fruit van from an etch kit, a BR 12T standard van from a Slater's kit and several, different diagrams, of LMS vans.

For whatever reason, not known to me, I failed to announce the details of the S7 Group Wagon Building Competition for 2017 on this forum - otherwise details were included in two of the recent group newsletters and on the S7 Group website. The competition was judged at the recent group AGM and the invited judge this year was Nigel Smith of the Warley MRC - better known as part owner of "the Engine Shed"... a member of the world famous "Loco Clinic"... and current chairman of the Gauge 0 Guild.
The entry selected by Nigel as the winner of the S7 Chairman's Cup for 2017 is Alan Turner with a delightful model of a Midland Railway Milk Van:-
Built from a Connoisseur Models kit with sprung suspension parts from Bill Bedford and sprung buffing gear from Slater's Plastikard.
Other entries for which I have reasonable photographs were:-
... a LMS Fish Van built from a Parkside kit for a Beer Van with appropriate ends from a different Parkside LMS van kit. This model is by Ron Pitts.
... A SR built PLV in BR(SR) condition circa 1960 built from a Slater's Plastikard kit by Rob Thompson.
and so to the subject for the 2018 competition - a tank wagon.

As a result of a full and frank discussion on the scope of the S7 Wagon Competition at the recent AGM... can all budding "build a S7 wagon" enthusiasts please be reminded that a more complete description of the rules and subject for the 2018 competition are to appear in the future S7 Newsletter where we shall all learn what "tank" wagons fit (or do not fit) within the scope of the competition for 2018.

S7 Committee discussions about the 2018 competition have been and gone... or rather, the discussions at the last AGM have taken root. Budding entrants and those who have yet to consider an entry are advised to read this post carefully as the rules of previous competitions have been relaxed.... and there are to be two separate, parallel, competitions for 2018.
First, the subject for the 2018 Competition is a tank wagon for the conveyance of crude oil or the products of distilling crude oil. So petroleum/diesel... kerosene... lubricating oil... and similar are eligible. Wagons for dry powders... food products... liquified gasses... are not eligible. In short, a tank wagon for Class "A" or for Class "B" loads.
Second, hot news is that for and from 2018 the competition rules allow for an entry which is based upon a Ready-to-Run model. For such an entry to be eligible the modifications to the RTR product must be more than just a change of livery or a change in lettering.
Finally, the big news... Scratch built wagons are eligible for and from 2018. A second competition for scratch built wagons is to be held at the same time, same place, as the competition for kit built / modified RTR models. The subject for the scratch built wagon competition is the same as for the kit / modified RTR entries.
So one subject and two parallel competitions with one judge, two results, two winners and two awards. The competition for kit-built / modified RTR wagons shall continue to be known as the Chairman's Cup - and yes, the trophy is still a shield. The name and trophy for the scratch-built wagon competition is still in discussion by the committee.
Oh, the judge for the 2018 competitions? I am pleased to announce that Gordon Gravett has agreed to be the judge on the day so I hope that there is a good show for our fifth competition.
