Standard tanks were never regular visitors to this corner of Mid-Wales, but 82044 had brought a train of Military stores from South Wales, via the Central Wales line and the little-used, semi-disused portion of the old line between Gunstone West Junction and Capel Bethesda.

The train of box vans has already been worked away from the yard, up to the Army Depot at Llandewi and 82044 will shortly pick up her brake van and the Llandrindod Wells pilotman, prior to returning via the same route.

Having been 'borrowed' by the shedmaster at Lydney shed for a quick trip into the Forest - 4mm - Parkend Marsh Sidings in P4
- 5328 was subsequently used to work a train of engineers hoppers conveying ballast from Whitecliff Quarry to Stoke Gifford, from whence she then worked the same train to Callow Lane, where it would be stabled for weekend engineering works:




Our photographer then captured the loco at rest in the 'GW' yard, prior to returning light engine to her home depot of Swindon:

Grey skies over Mid Wales. Peckett 'Plantagenet', on loan to the Vale of Radnor Light Railway waits in the yard for traffic from the in-bound goods from Leominster:

An Army diesel shunter has worked down the light railway to Bethesda, to await a train of stores due later in the afternoon. This North British 0-4-0 was always kept spotless by the depot, as were all their locos, but this one was a particular favourite of General Sir Tarquin Cadwallader, who seemed to undertake his very frequent tours of inspection, purely in order to be able to drive it.

A 350hp diesel shunter from Leominster was substituted for the booked 14XX one day, with a Hereford driver sent up specifically to pilot the booked crew as regards traction knowledge. All three chaps must be relaxing in the shunters cabin:

Splendid as the 350hp shunter is, my eyes are really drawn to the beautifully executed ballasting and the lovely "open" nature of the trackwork.

He's captured the sadness that is a 63xx beautifully, do I detect the hint of a tear? You can almost see it pondering if it will make it back to shed and how long before it joins some of its less fortunate brothers in having a date with a gas axe.
