Rob, I made the stand over 25 years ago from a piece of maple that was surplus in our joinery shop following construction of an office block in Wembly, the ballast is probably from Slaters, I just cannot remember but certainly long before I started looking for alternatives of such materials.
Cynric, yes it is 50' and is one of a batch built in the 40s. This particular vehicle is currently in Eastleigh works having been sold buy DB Schenker/EWS to London Underground and being converted for their use.
As an aside but linked topic, EasyBuild (Shawn Kay) is having more than a passing interest in the three similar vehicles built at Swindon, DB999506 to Lot 3095 in 1962 and DB999508 & DB999509 to Lot 3379 in 1963 and all to Diag 1/552. DB999508 was ultimately converted and operated by Serco as part of their Track Inspection Train and is currently to be seen as the single unit Track Inspection Coach - painted plain yellow and wedged between two Class 31s or the like. I have been fortunate in finding somebody who actually works in the coach and he has supplied me with a vast array of detail photos - so come on Shawn with the kit and I'll get the scalpel ready!
DB999508 has carried the following liveries (all acknowledgements to the photographers concerned) hopefully in correct chronological order.

Thanks Mike, I had thought about using aquarium gravel but not having seen any out of water I am not sure what size it actually is.

really missed an opportunity when I was part of the admin staff on a number of Motorway projects in the 60s and 70s where we had on site materials laboratories - a by-product was graded aggregates - from dust to whatever - with foresight I could have created the market, let alone cornered it
Personally, I think that OO ballast looks better on O, but each to his own.

Just ordered some 00 granite ballast from ebay I will see how that goes. I will show progress in due course.

Cheers CME, could I ask whose walling you used - I would like something like that or perhaps some inset arches to create a photographic backdrop.
