I would just like to thank everyone who came by to look at my demo and to talk all things Silhouette. I was able to put faces to names for a lot of fellow members that I hadn't met before, I am not going to attempt to name names because I value them all and wouldn't like to omit anyone by failing memory.

Chris and I had a great time and we were kept very busy with only very brief time off for good behaviour on both days. Having had a very brief look over the competition entries earlier in the day I had made a mental note that I didn't really need to be in the vicinity at 4pm because the competition was so good I didn't expect to do anything with my entries. It came as a bit of a surprise when I was "mid demo", and Nick Baines came by and told me I was needed at the competition stand. The happy (for me at any rate) result being that I collected 2nd and 3rd in the rolling stock section. It was the icing on what for me and Chris was a very nice Guildex cake.

I am still in Telford - a day on the Severn Valley to unwind so photos of my entries will follow when I get home.

I made a point of looking at the Heljan Class 50, 'cos I fancy one.

Apparently it's due out in Q2 of 2019, so maybe the one on the stand was not the final version, but what do you think of the front end?
Have they got the distinctive "peak" and slope to the windscreens?....

If we play 'spot the difference', I fear it will be a long list - and this is just the locos 'face'. Almost every feature on the original is either missing, in the wrong place or is the wrong shape on the model.

Despite best intentions that's not (and only very rarely is) a terribly fair comparison thanks to the joys of lens effects. I can see that the lens focal length was different across the two photos and that the angle of the camera varies. And while I think they've done a good job, any discrepancy could be purely down to photographic effects.

Just to round off this thread, as I have for the last few years I submitted some entries into the modelling competition.

I had four entries this year, three of them in the Rolling Stock section and one in the Loco section.

First up the loco entry

The steel hopper has featured on the forum before but I deliberately didn't share the NBR open before entering it. Sadly on the day I rather stupidly shut the end door so one of it's best features was lost... Having said that, there was no way it would have won so to do anything it would have only displaced one of my other entries. A full breakdown train quite rightly took first place.

The Highly Commended trophy (third) was taken by my Leaky Roofed Van as shared earlier in the sales section.

Last but not least, the Runner Up trophy was taken by my ex Midland Goods train.

This is comprised of 3 box vans and a short brake. All built from old Slaters kits which were modified to represent examples found in Essery's Midland Wagons (volume II I think). Two of them had roof doors added and the brake van was also modified by boarding up the end window of the open platform end.

Having had a peep at the other entries earlier in the day I was convinced that I hadn't done anything and it came as quite a shock when mid demo Nick Baines came to ask me to attend the Competition Stand to collect what I believed at that point to be my trophy for the Leaky Roofed van. I was even more surprised to be awarded Runner Up too.


Our own Ian Middleditch (@Ian@StEnochs) took 2nd and 3rd in the Loco section and his son Kenneth took 1st in the Modern Image section. Yorkshire Dave (@Yorkshire Dave) took first in the scenery section too, so all in all a good day for Thunderers!

Hi Rob. Congrats on your awards! Highly deserved! There was certainly excellent entries for the judges to consider. I was lucky enough for mine to have been considered the winner, which was just mind blowing when I looked at the quality of the other entrants.

I hadn't realised your was the winner of the loco section, that bit of the competition had been awarded by the time I arrived.
