Heljan Deltics

Heres a bit more.

I wanted to get a decent size speaker into the loco, SWD usually supply a 40mm round speaker with their sound chips. These are ok but the bigger the speaker the better they usually are and the more base sounds you are likely to get and a Deltic needs base. I have managed to fit a Visatron SC 4.7 ND that measures 71 x 41 x 30mm. Its a tight fit, you need to make a sealed speaker box for it thats slightly bigger. Here's the one I made up.

All the reinforcements in the bottom right hand corner of the above photos are so that you can file the outside away to get it to fit in the loco. In the photo above you can just about make out where I have filled it away to fit over the motor mounting. The top photo shows the completed box with the centre portion that has been cut out of the top.

This is how it fits in, its pretty close to the fly wheel.

And finally an image showing the side of the body after the respray with the painted quarter lights.

Note the deliberate tear to the data panel.

Hi Richard,

I dont mean to be pikkie, but is it the light that makes the front windows look odd, on the Deltic ?.

Interested in this. Every Deltic I've heard so far, be it in 4mm or 7mm sounds toy-like through lack of bass...except the Loveless one I saw at Telford, which sounded about right to me.

I hafve been working on the couplings this weekend. I don't like the Heljan coupling at all the hook is the wrong shape and the detail just isn't there as you can see below.

deltic detail (4 of 2).jpg

So I have been busy building CPL's deisel coupling, in fact 6 of them 2 for the deltic and 2 each for the 2 37's on the go at the moment. This is what you end up with and I even managed to get all 6 bob weights to work.

That looks a lot better and has been worth all the effort. I also primed the bogies sides this evening and will fit the sound chip tomorrow. So hopefully it might be finished for next weekend for run out to Bristol and a few laps of the S7 test track that will be there.

That coupling looks FAR better. Strange how something so small, because of where it's fitted, sticks out like a sore thumb when it's not right.

Will you be experimenting with wadding in the speaker boxes for more bass?
Or how about some bass-reflex enclosures?
Takes me back to when every self-respecting HiFi nutter made his own speakers, the bigger the better. A mate had some over 4 feet high with HUGE Tannoy 18" units in, the fronts were pieces of diamond mesh off the local works......
His wife hated them. LOL

I have managed to fit a decent size speaker in its own plasticard box, but there is no wadding in it.
It has only had a brief test run without the body fitted but I'm very happy with it.
I should have it all back together this weekend and if I do I will take it to Bristol for a test run on Sunday.

I have almost finished now, it just needs some weathering and final detail painting.
Fitting the body back ont he chassis proved more difficult than I expected. Unfortunately you cannot retain the drive mechanism for the fans and have the large speaker. I have been able to retain the fans by gluing them to the body but all the drive mechanism has been removed. I then still couldn't get the body t fit properly on the chassis, it did on one side but not the other. I cut away everything that might have been an obstruction, but it still wasn't perfect. So I went back to photographs that I took before I started any of this and it was clear that the body didn't fit that well then. The problem turned out to be the cab bulk head this was too high and needed to be reduced a little to get an acceptable fit on both sides.

As you can see all the ETH equipment has now been added, the cable is apiece of copper wire that I shall paint black.

That speak looks pretty meaty Richard. Have you tried squashing one into an HJ 47 yet?

Cheers

Not yet Tom, but it is a much better speaker than the 40mm that SWD provide with their XL sound chips. I have managed to get one in a JLTRT 40 and the 37, but not into any other heljans. I'm pretty certain they will also fit in my JLTRT 25.

*Makes mental note.* If you're bringing it along to Bristol tomorrow could I have a look and see how easily (or not) it may fit into my 33s please?

Cheers

Tom

PS I'll be on the demu stand

The speaker measures 71 x 41 x 30mm. I can't see how it would fit in my Heljan 26 so I think you might struggle with the 33, unless you have access to a milling machine to attack the chassis.

Sorry but I am not coming to Bristol now as its snowing quite heavily here in Sawbridgeworth and is forecast to for the rest of the day !
