Hunslet Welsh Quarry loco in 10 mm

I was asked to build a pair of chassis for 0-4-0T Hunslet Welsh Quarry locos in 10 mm and I thought why not let's give it a go. It's just a build of the chassis from the footplate down, the customer intends to 3D print the bodies. I've built a pair of these in 7mm and they're painfully small, but in 10 mm they're very tactile. The real things came with a variety of body types.

''They've got a footprint smaller than your Land Rover.'' Said Mick Davies, as he sent the fresh artwork off to PPD Ltd. A few weeks later we had some etches and they have been a delight to build. They will eventually have High Level 4 mm gearboxes in them, Alan Gibson diesel wheels and axles cut by David LO Smith.

I have had to add my own boiler clothing and make crossheads and slide bars, but it's been fun so far. Anyone fancy a go? We can make the etches available......

Very impressive (as usual) Nick - will these be to true scale 20mm gauge?

It would have been nice to see what you made of doing the bodywork as well...

These etches are for the Penryhn large quarry class, but as y'all probably know, no two are identical, especially with respect to the frame profile.

The body work is not included in Nicks etches at the customers request, but if anyone wants them then let me know and I can look into working up a new sheet. Castings you'll have to source elsewhere I'm afraid.

Thought you might like to know where I'd got to with this. I bought some Alan Gibson 4 mm horn guides and axleboxes and modified them a bit to fit. They weren't square and the axle hole wasn't in the middle of the square, but when aligned with my trusty jury axles (thanks DLOS) they will be fine, as long as the horn blocks stay with the same guide in the same orientation.

I used my drill as a press to assemble the wheels and fly cranks on the axles.

I used a High Level Gearbox and a small Mashima motor. These gearboxes are the ABC of 4 mm and are very smooth in operation if assembled carefully. For the record the wheels are Alan Gibson 4 mm deisel wheels of approx the correct diameter.

And here it is sat on the rails. I'll finish them tomorrow.
