I have been remaking the roof section for the North lights now the lights are fitted to the structure.

Before they are painted I needed to take them to the club and ensure they all fit.

IMG_6060.jpeg.df05a743c745ed26b2756486bb3e784a.jpg

I also wanted to see haw the glazing will look. I have done this is black acrylic as I did not want the internal lighting leaking out. I can also cut this myself and once it is weathered it should look ok.

IMG_6059.jpeg.f18be01db4b48b2aceba45427268c71a.jpg

In Addition you cannot see it on the inside from most angles when the layout is at its normal height.

IMG_6055.jpeg.d49562fd483b39848abcbfc2994e4e3d.jpg

You will also note I have made a prototype gutter that goes between each North Light structure.

My original plan was to 3D print these but they would have to be in several sections and they would have been difficult to fit. I was not sure the MDF version would work until I made one.

With the assemblies being long and only using 1mm MDF when I did the drawing I included sacrificial lugs on the outside edge, this was to give something for the sides to slot into and would stay in place while the glue dried. I have used the same method when designing etching drawings and it works well. It's an idea I got from when I worked in fabrication for 10 years.

IMG_6033.jpeg.508df7de5638bc94d3910dc461d3ab2a.jpg IMG_6032.jpeg.0b12166ce8c594bd612cd6da8b6fb465.jpg

IMG_6034.jpeg.2bc736763397e0ef722b176d4a5c8d28.jpg

Once the glue has dried the lugs are easily cut off with a scalpel and dressed using a sanding block.

The prototype was tried in place.

IMG_6054.jpeg.b73543f3cedfad6d6539787f55003c9d.jpg

The exercise proved to be useful. All but the roof structure that meets up with the boiler shop fitted as they should. The end of this one needed a small modification to each side. The gutter also needed a slight modification to improve the fit.

You will note the gutter exstend over the wall at each end and a fall pipe will drop on each side. These have already been drawn ready for printing hopefully over the weekend.

The modified parts and all the gutters were all cut tonight and will be assembled tomorrow.

The plan now is to get all the structure units painted this weekend. I can then star fitting the glazing panels and do the tiling on all the roof sections.

As I am getting close to the point where I will be able to do the tiling (with York Model Company tile sheet) on the North Light roof structures as I am currently painting the sides.

The structures are uneven and will be difficult to hold while I add the tiles.

IMG_6080.jpeg.550e662ccf5c9df8339940a6e7cf80b5.jpg

It occurred to me that I needed to make some kind of fixture that will present the face for tiling flat and level. So Last night I spent a couple of hours drawing up a fixture for cutting on the laser.

This was cut this evening and put together.

IMG_6083.jpeg.49aa4341cc354b5ec5f2decd51689f04.jpg IMG_6081.jpeg.0352644abb703e93284d40b5b6ef8ca1.jpg

This was designed with slots and tabs and all went to gather as planned.

The roof sections now sit in place and this will be far better for applying the tiles.

IMG_6085.jpeg.25a1b2a7fdba32b6878f552d55fa3b4e.jpg IMG_6084.jpeg.e5e2b3c0a2a18ddb315bb8ee421e0733.jpg

The end views show it better.

IMG_6086.jpeg.cf523f9befc13f0cee388d0649a5e6ad.jpg IMG_6087.jpeg.d09d524493f27ac13a84cf883ece7033.jpg

There is more weathering wash to apply to the side panels, once this is done I can make a start with the tiles.

First of six roof sections tiled on the new fixture tonight.

IMG_6089.jpeg.144cbaf3fddb1293443aafb170c7a086.jpg

I had scribed the spacing on the roof panel with the laser which makes it easier to keep everything in line.

IMG_6091.jpeg.b2fb24306eeeee9a37132b6cc4e69885.jpg

I am also pleased with the weathering I have done on the walls - it just needs a capping ion the top edge and the glazing fitting.

Easter weekend, and I was helping Peter Kirmond with his 2mm fine scale model of YORK at York exhibition for three days, but this would not stop me from making some progress.

IMG_6096.jpeg.78344e5122b1c8431b41b6a93f5be1aa.jpg

I still had two North Light to tile so I took these with me.

In-between operations the layout I set the jig up on the end of the table and managed to get both done during the show.

IMG_6095.jpeg.f2cdc025c174c6913bc5a005627b51ad.jpg

I have also now started to get things painted as it is a bit warmer in the garage.

The powerhouse metal frame has been etched primed and painted in the army painter white and green.

The building structure brickwork has also been primed ready for me to start picking out brickwork.

IMG_6106.jpeg.fb6e2adbfce7700f3410094da44acf17.jpg

The fall pipes have also been painted. I just need to make a jig to do the drilling to fit the down pipes.

IMG_6102.jpeg.2d6266e87c7224d7de64bd5b102ac413.jpg

I have finally finished fitting all the glazing bars and the panels have also been fitted to the North Lights.

This weekend I have finally got to the point where I can start painting the brickwork on the main yard building.

I have had to do a few modifications including using a hole saw on the base and in the back wall to improve access for fitting windows and stairways after it is painted.

I also had to finish fitting beams and upper walls into the garage. This area was painted white so I masked the area so I could do the white first.

IMG_6115.jpeg.d2fffc7f2f2f8e599ba9e6094e998b5a.jpg IMG_6116.jpeg.ec776db8ff5b4e9072c2d543779f1f63.jpg

I should have taken a photos of the white painted area before I masked this up, but I forgot and the next photos is all the White area masked up.

IMG_6117.jpeg.c5b69366034e954b4b80b52c694b4f40.jpg

Although it is long and awkward I still used my painting turntable.

IMG_6118.jpeg.2985361adea0195699ce3c0eab06272e.jpg

I then applied several coats of Hycote red primer.

IMG_6120.jpeg.cb40bd26df523bb6df0eb8935251f243.jpg

IMG_6121.jpeg.8594f1f1c3107838ddaf1d6380850abb.jpg IMG_6122.jpeg.387c4d75b3f9819f1c5a55e23c46ebf9.jpg

The turntable made it easer for turning round to do the back of the chimneys etc.

I also finished painting the crane bridge section with primers. I used a dark brown for the top section as this will be a good base for it being even dirtier up in the eaves and around the crane tracks. This also need brickwork detailing etc.

IMG_6123.jpeg.d8cf7d3570f3988eb8b50a273d849338.jpg IMG_6124.jpeg.6bc372eaf0c779e8001cf7705264e038.jpg

In between the painting, the 3d printer has also been going, producing the last parts for the North Lights. I have been making some campings for the top edge. I have to be honest this has been a nightmare with several aborted prints. These are not 100% but they are close and should be fine when painted.

IMG_6125.jpeg.78081ddc326c5fd754fb67380f1a450b.jpg

The picture of the wash and cure shows the second batch being cursed this afternoon.

IMG_6126.jpeg.8f0a3a19fe2a47f643e529298afce4fc.jpg

They are now all fettled and painted and will be fitted tomorrow night.

Also on the printer I have drawn a grate for the apertures I designed in the yard concrete. -18at13_47_20.png.af615ecdd420de4b3037f93bca5993cf.png
I was really pleased when I worked out how to create the fall to the middle. There are only 8mm square and 1mm thick.

IMG_6112.jpeg.3c35a08594aefa149326eb01c8824d37.jpg

They have come out better than I thought they would.

Sounds like my experience with a resin 3d printer
To Be fair - some of it was down to design errors as I made these up. On saying that two failures were down to them being so long and curling on the ends were it was thinner. I added some sacrificial extension on and it got rid of most of the issue.

Following on from the last post I have progress with the following.

1. Fitted the capping to all the North Lights.

IMG_6128.jpeg.ced562e1f41967bd99e1f3e8a4cd1ae4.jpg

2. Started the big job off detailing the brick work prior to weathering down.

I started with the two bridge structures. There are three colours I use on top of the red primer.

IMG_6131.jpeg.5b0d6ad8a7bac11c1e8e22823d7139f3.jpg IMG_6170.jpeg.feb2936dfde09c5688a437205970a6be.jpg

IMG_6181.jpeg.87de56e9ca9df4ac4e8aaf8e6574980c.jpg

The upper floor section was a bit tricky.

IMG_6168.jpeg.90785c48809d05b180c24fe162b2a906.jpg IMG_6175.jpeg.e4f0802869b53e47a1f5a00646d0d20f.jpg

There. were put to one side when finished.

3. I now turn to the main yard building which is massive in comparison.

It has some more modern areas where the brickwork will be generally lighter, there are also areas that have been p

I decided to do a couple more test pieces and although I am not total 100% happy with. it's not far off being there.

IMG_6166.jpeg.3ba251e5972fff72ae03b378626431cb.jpg IMG_6167.jpeg.d8d50369636b5ef1c735a544f10a363c.jpg

IMG_6171.jpeg.a991ac2bdc6d917c007c57e3fcf91c13.jpg IMG_6173.jpeg.c8b6d9b0d242ab74337d8721ca2dc630.jpg

What I have to do is make sure I do not get too giddy when airbrushing the wash coats on the brickwork and making it all too dark.

IMG_6185.jpeg.2a8dfb029c871d90c815038b9f3aa758.jpg

This testing will not hold up the process of doing the bricks for three quarters of the main building as this is the original structure with the old brickwork.

4. I have also started painting windows.

IMG_6177.jpeg.020a48ab69252a624dc0bc00d4446396.jpg

These like all the exterior paintwork is painted green with the Army Painter greenskin primer.

It looks a bit bright, but the dark wash soon tones it down.

Once the green had dried, these were masked up.

IMG_6179.jpeg.21823a4f993d5aff8e35522911572c02.jpg

They were then sprayed black.

IMG_6180.jpeg.53e4b76399b668f4f086f0cee6dc1481.jpg

With the masking removed they are now ready for fitting along with the glazing.

Please see part two due to limits on the number of photos in each post.

Part 2.

5. Another problem I had been considering for several months was how to do the cables that run up the wall under the power house.

You can just see them in the B & W photo below.

Hudswellcopy.jpeg.c43a432e18be4caaf35bb4a6ad544d5c.jpg

I had thought of trying to draw them in 3d and print them but this would have been very difficult.

I then thought why not just use cable but it would be difficult to get some the right diameter.

I then remembered I had some 2mm silicone tube I was going use to represent pipe work on locos. But I did not have enough. While searching the internet I came across to leather cord and I thought the surface of this would be more convincing for big old cables.

I cut some dummy cleats on the laser. Note the holes are only 2mm diameter.

IMG_6184.jpeg.d5a8e8ec6dd042eab84a9b9d05e7e40c.jpg

I have mocked the cables up in place to see if it works and I am really pleased. these will be fixed in place after the brickwork has been weathered.

IMG_6183.jpeg.a53058021d86d90f203a66fea00704ba.jpg

6. Back to the North Light covers. I took these to the clubrooms in the hope of being able to get these glued in place.

This has not gone quite to plan especially with the gutters.

IMG_6187.jpeg.76874f0308c905565da1a0804b84afb7.jpg

As there is no structure under the gutters they are sagging and letting light show through at the bottom of the glazing. I am looking at a couple of options to fix this.

IMG_6186.jpeg.91323c395b9f91a61420f5517b1e85c0.jpg

IMG_6188.jpeg.2225011ff6ec4a6c677f2874cfa4060e.jpg

I am also having issues with the interface at the end of the gutter. I will hopefully sort all these issues at the weekend.

7. North light outer fall pipes.

I did take the opportunity test the fall pipe drilling jig on the one gutter that has been fitted as planned..

IMG_6191.jpeg.3a792699a64c63541fce9f08cd32ec36.jpg

This worked as designed and the pipe actual clip in place.
IMG_6190.jpeg.13368e6623c449d46328b50a5ec8e569.jpg

Once the covers are fitted permanently, all the fall pipes will be fixed in place.

IMG_6189.jpeg.9907af34e9fd350882584ffa50497226.jpg

Although the North Lights have been frustrating you get an idea from the photos what the overall effect will be,

Thank you for your comment - I have always thought it is better to acknowledge things do not always go to plan and not just posting the positives .
This whole project has been a learning process and I am sure there is still more to come.
