Inside a smoking space

Hello all
I have been watching the comments about smoking and the effects on the coaches and buildings in Kay's coach build account.
Not to take it over but (to me) an interesting observation. About 1986 I was looking for a cheap car and found a Humber Avenger base model, plastic seats & rubber mats + loads of cigarette ends and empty packets so very cheap. Open the windows, a good scrub and plenty of air freshener and it came up ok. Only other work (not counting standard servicing) was a gasket on the carburettor. Ran it for 2 years, did just over 40,000 miles and sold it for virtually what I had paid.
That was when I was young and fit enough to do the jobs and one of many 'trade clearance'

Regards
Allen

Pleased you had success, Allen.
But I feel compelled to bring the universe back into equilibrium and thus harmony by telling you that I was given a company car - also an Avenger but I think a Talbot one - that had been used by a heavy smoker for two years.
Had it deep valeted, just couldn't get rid of the stink, it was like sitting in an ashtray.
Parked the piece of $£@! up and commandeered the works Sherpa tipper until they found me another (non-smoker's) cast-off.

When I was an HGV driver one of the best rules ever to come in was when truck cabs came under the smoking ban in a 'public space'. Before then there were some trucks I'd refuse to drive as they stunk so badly of stale tobacco!
In my current job, self employed painter & decorator, I've turned down work in houses inhabited by smokers.
Re models, just a very few I've bought second hand have had a tinge of smoke smell, which soon wore off, & fortunately no books have, which would probably absorb it more.

I followed instructions in an online tutorial that assured success in cleansing a book I had obtained s/h of smoke.
It involved baking soda and an airtight container and creating air gaps between each page.
Total waste of time, I had to admit defeat and obtain another copy - has anyone had any success in this field?
