Evening - the western is 1015 - the white balance on my camera has made the colour look a bit odd.
The model is Towers Ltd Ed , but does come with the wrong colour windscreens - I'd say the livery overall is a little bit of a hybrid between 1015s service livery and one of its preserved liveries - If I'm right , I think champion only had red bufferbeams when preserved -
Im not sure what to do with the model yet - either backdate it , or corectly model it as preserved.
Either way , i like it a lot. I just wish i hadnt run out of Kleer , or id have made it nice and glossy by now :(

Tinkering with 1015 - ive had the cabs out - the rear bulkheads.
The light conduit detail looks a bit weedy and some other bits are a bit wrong , but im going to try and make the best of whats there.
IMG_0568_zps9f1374d6.jpg

Some little bits and pieces added - i cant decide if my attempt to make the bulkhead lights looks rubbish or not.
IMG_0572_zpsc8ed49dd.jpg
Cab desks - the controls looks a bit weedy as supplied so I've removed them -
and remade the distinctive power handles - the brake controls will be Jltrt castings, and
ill probably add new seats from the same source.

This bit looks very 2D -

Lucky its s separate piece glued into the underframe moulding, so was easy to remove.
I've made a start on building a replacement thats got a bit more depth - two more fillers to add:
It's more 'impression' than 'accurate'

Looking interesting Jon, but back the the EE:p

What material did you use for the cab lights?

Cheers

Hi Tom , for the cab lights I used some clear sprue from some knightwing glazing - I would have thought that scale bulkhead lights would have existed somewhere for ship modellers , but couldn't find anything. The idea was to use something translucent to diffuse the LED lighting a bit - but much like bright orange fittings on bufferbeams , If something is going to light up , it really needs to look correct first!.
I'm slowing up a little on my 37 , as the bogie sideframes are a little bowed - I'm not sure if they'll straighten out by hand , or maybe in hot water...

Ahh, I was wondering if they're offcuts from something 3D printed as they look a bit like FUD.

I managed to straighten mine out with hot water and cold. So far they've remained in straight alignment.

I had the same problem as well and, like Tom, I managed to straighten mine out with hot water and then plunging them into cold.

Thanks Tom and Martin - I should be able to get the 37 bogies started tomorrow.
'Mean time , I've been looking through my books for pictures of D1015 in service , in Golden Ochre , and found nothing at all , The only picture online appears to be this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/david_christie/6017684144/
I was hoping to find something with a bit more interesting weathering. .:(

The side frames are always a bit bent, I have had over 10 pairs, I sent one pair back and still got a bent pair in return.
They do straighten a bit in hot water but not as much as you would like.

Jon,
There was a photo of D1015 in one of the Modern Locomotives Illustrated calendars...
Steph

Jon,
Just been through my MLI mags; it's in the 2009 calendar, free with MLI no.174 (Dec 2008 - Jan 2009) 'Main Line Prototypes, The Private Builders'. It's a pretty clean pic, taken at Handborough with Winston Churchill's funeral train in January '65. Buffer beam colour isn't completely clear, but I'd go with Golden Ochre. The buffer bodies might be red though. Difficult to tell as the colour balance is a bit off. BTW, front window pillars are also Golden Ochre.

Good afternoon - thankyou for the pictures and livery info - I think i've settled on Backdating my 1015 - (though I think the model would look equally as good in Preserved condition)- so Golden ochre bufferbeams , and ill correct the colour on the windscreen surrounds.
I've just started fixing the headcode boxes - here's the first rough fit
IMG_0590_zps52c544ff.jpg
- I've moved then up 1mm - It looks as though the grab handles above the tail lights are too long, or too low , or perhaps both? The headboard brackets will be moved up too. The radius on the corners of the warning panel looks a bit big to me , so I'll try and sort this too.
Im a bit happer with drivers desk now - in the end I've used JLTRT castings for all the controls - Ill have to move both the brake levers over a bit as they currently foul the glazing (I fitted them in the original holes where the original heljan bits were fitted, which was a mistake)

Have a nice Bristol!

Good afternoon -
I've been working on the 37 again- cab tranfers: (thankyou to Martin)
IMG_0601_zps6f57a40f.jpg

Ive also been using Toms very nice etched detail set - one example of what's included is a jig to correct the lifting point covers:
Here the originals which (incorrectly) stand proud of the bodywork:

IMG_0599_zpse3b18efa.jpg

The etch acts as a jig to drill holes for new bolts (I used some .4 nickel silver wire), and also acts as a template to scribe in new panel lines - Much better:
IMG_0600_zps35fa76a3.jpg

There's a similar etch to help model the square panel beside the grille. JLTRT supply this as an etched overlay , but it should also be flush, so its another drill and scribe job. The JLTRT plastic scribes nicely - I just used a sequin pin in a small pin vice.

Hi Jon... my first post on here, and really pleased to see your work; it's bigger than before isn't it. Well, that worries me; I'm sure it was your work on your 4mm 37s that convinced me to do more with my original 55s... so I'm now wary about all this 7mmm stuff; yes it looks lovely but I haven't the space really for a 4mm layout let alone 7... but you do get nicer diesels don't you. Ho hum. I was interested in seeing the western project too.. spent a bit of time pondering which one it was before the penny dropped - it's 7mm too - I was really confused comparing it with my new Dapol one... although I'm now convinced that either the headcode box or something else is now in the wrong place on that too... how could they get that wrong after a laser scan? No, I'm not going there... yet. Anyway... hi. The user name's changed, but the avatar should be familiar.
All good work here Jon...
See you around sometime.

Hi , well its about time for an update - the body has been united with the cabs - i thought it was going to be a pain hiding the joins but i didn't need as much filler as i was expecting. At the no1 end the cab roof is almost level with the fan panel , which is wrong as it should be lower , but if i attached the cab lower then the bottom edge of the bodysides wouldn't match the cab mouldings. Looks ok from all normal viewing angles :)
On to painting - Heres some piccies Primer first
IMG_0742_zps898ad268.jpg
I spray this rather than using primer in aerosol cans as it gives a much smoother finish.
I block in the tail lights and sandbox fillers with yellow by hand first . Toms tail light etches have fine detail on them , and this'll help preserve that as it saves lots of passes with the airbrush trying to fill the tail lights
