Lionheart/Dapol Ivatt 2MT

Nice, but should have been the NB D63xx Diesel Hydraulic - but they have left the door open for Accurascale to come up with the goods.

A D63xx would certainly appeal to Pencarrow!

It'd appeal to me, too!! :)
As I've reported before, at Kettering this year the gist of the comment from the Dapol stand when I asked about a D63xx was 'Unlikely, but never say never'.
It seems some at Dapol would like to go ahead, but a 'higher up' Decision Maker is against it because he fears a deluge of claims for refunds from those who (like me) lost money in the Little Loco Co. debacle.
Quite how the said Decision Maker has come to that conclusion I have no idea, nor did the Dapol chap I spoke to.

Re this model - a diecast body!! Looks like it'll weigh a ton, and pull like a.... well, yes, like a train... ;) :D

The Ivatt tank is a sound move. It's still a relatively small loco in 7mm but quite widespread in allocation. I've always thought that they have s nice 'chunky ' look to them. The fact that they're doing Southern versions is excellent as they popped up pretty much all over the Southern Region.

With the usual retailer discounts ( 15% maximum normally ), DCC ready will be around £527.00, DCC Fitted will be around £558.00 and the noisy one at around £629.00.

So it's certainly not cheap, but the specifications seem to reflect the potential prices.

You’d struggle to get the kit & bits to build one for that kind of money, and I’d guess they’re correct in most dimensions & details & will appropriately decorated so I’d expect they‘ll sell well.

never understood why Dapol made a pig’s ear of the 6W milk tankers.

Do we know yet which locos will have which chimneys fitted? Iirc there was a tall narrow one and a shorter squat one. And will 41272 have the special plate fitted on the tank side recording it was the 7000th loco built at Crewe??

Morning, Pencarrot.

Not sure. The blurb does say three different chimneys will be used plus other detail variations do they seem to be having a go. Obviously, we'll know more when the decorated samples are available. I know 272 ran with the plate in place on the Southern Region. I recall a colour image, maybe taken at Wadebridge ( I think ? ) in one of the Michael Welch colour volume * things.....maybe....possibly ?

It does hint that the decorated samples might not be that far away.

Yes, that's the photo I'm thinking of... 41272 and 41275 were regulars in the Wadebridge area ...

Perhaps that is the difference between the standard Dapol and the subsidiary Lionheart range which are still very much managed by Richard Webster.

I first saw the Ivatt much earlier in the year when he brought the first EP over to the Border's MRC at Llandrinio, but we were asked not to shout about it until the official announcement.

So I have seen it up close and running as well. Like the 3MT and the 45xx before it, it runs very smoothly and quietly.

I want one, but whether I can justify one is another matter.

I met Richard at a show (Reading?) and saw the EP for the 08 some years ago, I was very impressed, but it’s not a loco I have much use for. I’m delighted by most of the other Lionheart products, of course :)

The 3MT is the third of Richard Webster’s “2-6-2t common rail chassis” venture, the plan being one from each region - the 3MT being the Southern candidate so presumably the Eastern region one will be a V1/V3, we shall see in the fullness of time. I am getting my 3MT on Tuesday.

OT
Because it was designed by the ..... that they employed before Richard replaced him. [see also dreadful early open wagons] Richard phoned me about the milk tank he had inherited and it wasn't even clear to him whether it was designed for wagon wheels (GWR) or carriage wheels (LMS). He went with carriage wheels. It was too far advanced to make much correction before production and release.

Thanks Paul,

I recall Adrian Swain detailing the issues when they first came out. A great shame as I’m sure I’d have had a couple had they been a little better, and I guess I’m not alone.

Some of the detail differences on the Ivatts seem to be randomly dispersed between class members. For instance, long and short guard irons, and some had a strengthening angle behind the cabside windows. I think there was at least three types of. chimney. Some also had an extra tank top lid on the fireman's side for water treatment.
From 41290 the cab roof was modified , and the first 10 locos built had the injectors mounted under the side tanks.
Here is my effort, built some years ago using a DJH kit. It's almost right!image.jpg
