Describing the Lenz SET100 as 'old' is a little unfair.  It's true that they haven't updated the casework but they have added features with new firmware and continue to drive the standard to some extent.  I've always had Lenz command gear; when I started it was the only system that worked on both the MOROP/NEM and NMRA standards.  Even now, with the standards largely unified, the reference is the Lenz gear...

I have to admit that ergonomically the LH100 sucks though it does have a lot of use on a larger layout, it has a great deal of functionality.  For driving locos and switching the odd point the LH90 is a much better controller with it's dial.  Mind you, the LZV100 (Lenz command station) opens up some interesting options such as unleashing the full potential of the Multimaus.  The latter is probably ergonomically the best and most intuitive DCC handset on the market currently...

Guess what I use?  :))

I quite like the ergonomics of the Lenz - less is more :)) i will have to see what I can haggle between the two sets although i am leaning towards the lenz although im not sure why

You have hit upon the key issue: ergonomics.
I have had the Lenz Compact+ and set 100, and whilst there is nothing wrong with the latter (and not much wrong with the former if you just want a basic system) I prefer the NCE handset, so have switched to that.
Both are equally good, the Lenz may cost you a bit more to begin with, but will have sufficient power for your needs.

One of the considerations I had when choosing my system was what the handset felt like.

Bearing in mind I wanted a 10 amp system which restricted my choice - I think I was left with 3 options at the time - by far and away the best was the NCE handset. Genuine 1-handed operation, wheel or button for speed, and no second functions to get confused with. I realise I am learning on the job, but I have had no cause to regret the decision.

It really is just one of those things that, in the end, comes down to personal preference, I think. The chaps whose Lenz gear I used were quite happy with it, and as they team up together (both with sharing locos and joining their layouts together) it makes sense for them to both use the same system. I just know I prefer the NCE.
