New Joiner

Hello All,

After admiring the work I've seen on this site I thought it was about time to join in! I am pretty new to railway modelling and posting so you may have to bear with me!

Being a Bristolian born and bred I am fascinated by all things GWR, although having moved to London I am becoming increasingly interested in pre-grouping Southern companies, particularly the LSWR.

My scale of choice is 7mm and I am about to embark on my first build project - a JLTRT GWR Class 517 tank (has to be one of my favourite locos). And, never one to shy away from a challenge, I am intending to build it to Scale7 standards (too much looking at the work of Tony Reynalds  )! In which case I think I should be joining the Scale7 group (I'm already a member of the Gauge 0 Guild) - what do you guys think?

I will be posting about progress as I go along (and no doubt asking a LOT of questions about how best to go about things!).

I am really looking forward to participating on the site!

Welcome  :wave: what period do you intend to model?  The MRJ articles by Guy Williams are a good place to start. You will get plenty of S7 encouragement.

Welcome to the mad house...  there are about ten S7 Group members who post here and that includes me.  As I tend towards Edwardian GWR and as I have coverted a desire for a 517 for too long then I shall be very interested to read and to see how you proceed with the kit.  As for joining the S7 - members pay less than non-members for items from the S7 Stores and that offsets the membership fee.

Whereabouts do you live?  You may find that there are other S7 modellers who are not too far from you.

I intend to model the pre-grouping era circa 1900 - something about those Victorian engines! I'll see if I can find the Guy Williams articles - I've seen his 4mm 517 scratchbuild article in the early days, quite the build! At present I will be mainly accumulating locos and stock and maybe building a small, portable layout/moving diorama - no space for anything more at this time!

Thanks Graham. I think I'll be joining the S7 society then! I live slap in the centre of London - near Paddington, of course! Has anyone seen the refurb they've done on the third roof? Stunning

From another Scale 7 member in deepest Essex, welcome. You are not far from some of the area groups, you have the S.E. area group at Sawbridgeworth, Hert's of which some of the members live in Norf' London and the East Anglian group at Sudbury, Suffolk of which I am a member.

Do you know which one you want to do? There are so many variations it is minefield, although I do have quite a few shots of them in various books. Are you going for AGH wheels as well? I'm pretty sure the Slaters are not quite right for the 517 iirc the front of the spokes need to be flat and the wheel boss is a slightly different shape

Thanks 28ten - it seems from background reading that the variety on the class is indeed extraordinary    Once I have homed in on a prototype and ready to commence the build I'll be posting in the WR area of the forum Are there any books which would be particularly useful for source material? I'm currently relying on internet materials but I don't find it the same as having the hard copy in front of me.

In terms of wheels, unfortunately I don't have the budget for Alan Harris wheels at the moment  I'm looking at what I can do with Slaters' wheels (reprofiled) and modified to reflect the prototype (thinking here about the wheel boss in particular).

Locomotives illustrated 60 isnt a bad place to start, there is no definitive book, just bits here and there. If you are not fussed on the allocation then it is easier to find a good photo and work from that - if you see what I mean

I know exactly what you mean 

I have found a rich vein of photographs covering 517s in the Midlands - although my preferred allocation is closer to London/South and West, since I'm a real fan of the 517 and want to work from a well photographed prototype, I think I may have to build a West Midlands 517 and hope that no-one notices if it ever makes my dream layout
