Nick Dunhill's Workbench - SR S15 loco from a Gladiator kit.

Nick.

A photo on Rail online of 844 in BR days at Feltham only shows 1 boiler band. Whereas the next photos on the same page of 30847 clearly show that extra bit of cladding.

Unfortunately Bradley is less than helpful, however Irwell tells me that there were two washout plugs each side, those on the RH side being further forward than those on the left. As far as I can tell through the grey grime in a b and w photo of 1937 844 had the single boiler band. 30844 had a general overhaul in the autumn of 1959 when boiler no 833 was fitted which had multiple washout plugs, however there was much interchanging of boilers within both the Urie and Maunsell variants.

Your pic though is potentially misleading in that whilst the numberplate says 825 the boiler and tender are from 841 which lastly had an NBL built boiler and I am puzzled by the mudhole doors rather than washout plugs which are not apparent in any of the pics available to me. Hey ho.

I have been able to crack on with the build, and now it is almost finished.

I have made a form tool for the smoke deflectors too. To get a nice crisp fold I soldered a thin strip of 0.3 mm thick NS to a thicker strip. This sat inside the half etched part of the smoke deflector etch, and allowed me to grip all the length of the fold.

I just need to position the smoke deflector nicely so it sits on the footplate vertically and the top edge sits under the handrail. This will allow me to position the handrail knobs nicely.

Does anyone have a drawing that shows how far in from the edge of the footplate the smoke deflector sits? Bradley maybe?

All finished. I was able to work out where the smoke deflectors fitted to the footplate using the rivet patterns, and comparing to photos. The smoke deflectors don't appear on the GA, so must have been on a dedicated drawing. The kit has no provision for a drag box on either tender or loco. They became a last minute addition to both.

This is the finished loco with all the brightwork removed ready for paint.

I'll post more pics of the finished model in a few weeks.
