Oh No - Another New Member!

Hello Everyone
I joined a few days ago and this seems to be a very friendly place so I decided to introduce myself.
I'm Noel and I live at the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset.
I'm modelling in the unusual scale of 5.5mm/ft Narrow Gauge - which probably puts me in a minority of one here! My layout is gradually taking shape in its own room (pinched from the garage) at home. It purports to represent a small mineral tramway through the Nettlebridge Valley, which is just down the hill from where I live.
Best wishes to all,
Noel

Hi Noel, a warm welcome to you. We're becoming a very broad brush;). I hope and look forward to seeing some pics of your modelling on in this interesting gauge. However, I fear you may be in the minority..... for a while at least! I hope some of your locos are BLUE;). All the best, Boris.

Welcome Noel  Looking forward to seeing the layout progress - being a Bristolian born and bred I used to explore that area of the Mendips at every opportunity I could get!

Welcome Noel.

I too have just joined the group, there may not be many modelling in 5.5mm scale but you'll find plenty of inspiration.

It sounds a really obscure Scale (although even I have heard of it before!!) but there must be something about it that makes it viable... what's the track gauge work out at? - that usually is a big influence in Narrow Gauge as to what the scale works out to be

Wasn't it a scale thought up by GEM many years ago for their white metal NG models to fit on available proprietary chassis - I can't remember if it was TT-3 scale chassis to give about 2' 3" gauge or 00 scale chassis to give 3' gauge.

Hello Noel and Welcome to WT.
I too have dabbled in 5.5mm scale and have tinkered with a few Malcolm Savage kits 'n' bits and even bought a Mike Chinery Simplex chassis but never got around to buying the body kit.
The parts sit in a drawer close by as I could never make my mind up if I prefered 5.5mm or 7mm NG but regardless the 5.5mm Association is a great little group with a excellent newsletter.

Look forward to seeing your layout on here at some point.

5.5mm sounds interesting. I'm liking all these minority scales, anything a bit different gets a vote from me :) I would imagine there is a fair bit of scratch building involved and obviously we need pictures :)

Quite right Jim. 5.5mm/ft scales at approximately 1:55 and is midway between 4mm and 7mm.

When Tri-ang brought out their TT range GEM took the opportunity to market a range of white metal NG kits. These were to suit the 12mm gauge TT track, representing about 2ft 3in gauge in the new scale - OK for most Welsh NG railways and spot-on for a couple of them. Malcolm Savage later bought the GEM moulds and re-worked them. Malcolm has since added quite a lot more rolling stock, figures, etc., so the range is now probably more extensive than ever.
I'm modelling in 12mm gauge, but these days quite a few members also use 16.5mm gauge, being exactly right for 3ft gauge lines.

Cheers
Noel

Thanks Guv. I'll do my best with pictures - do they all have to be Flickr images?
