Steph, ahh, not looked underneath myself, I see your point though :), and yes, at their price you'd expect more fidelity.

Hi Steph, tried posting earlier but it went t*** up :headbang:. Had problems with the fire-box, boiler and smoke-box, had to skim one of the boiler and one of the smoke-box formers to make them fit but the handrails are out of line :headbang:. Might have to buy JLTRT fire-box, boiler and smoke-box.
Here are two photo's of the pony truck.

Len,

That's not the bogie as supplied, is it? What changes have you made?

Hi Steph back home after a weeks holiday. The two white metal outer frame pieces are from Laurie Griffin I had to thin them down quite a bit to make the axles fit, and I made the bogie centre section from the advice of Bob Alderman also fitting brass tubes for the axles to pass through. Below is a picture of the frames nearly finished.

that they were originally 'Princess Royal Coronations', shortened to 'Princess Coronation', shortened again to 'Coronation'

Sorry to go on about it but......in my spotting days in Crewe they were universally referred to as 'semis' harking back to the days when the casing came off leaving the sloping smokebox top i.e. 'semi streamlined' . In the North shed they were either a 'Big 'un ' or a 'Big Liz' ,'Duchess' being occasionally heard but not referred to the class as a whole just 'Duchess of-------.............Princess Coronation,Coronation, City .....never..........happy days, in the minds eye I can still see one starting off for Perth on a damp day with 14/16 on .......Vesuvius on wheels !!!!

Valid point, much like today we all call class 40's 'whistlers' but you try and research whistler in NRM or any archive :), class 40 or EE Type4 then maybe your get some results :). Enthusiasts nearly always had alternative names from official records. Its a name, nothing more, nothing less, the original comment was tongue in cheek, a mistaken not to be made again LOL.

Hi guys,

A quick, post-Telford, update would seem to be in order:
I was expecting to be trying to get an MMP 'Semi' out of Ragstone models, but felt that the Finney one was worth a good look. So while I was doing that, Martin asked if I'd like to have a closer look. 'Yes', says I. And so it was revealed that the Finney kits boiler is not solid, but has a 1.25" hole the length of it; rather splendid for a QSi high-bass speaker thought I!
Chris Wesson also asked if I was going for a set of Harris wheels. I indicated that if I could find a set, I most probably would. With a potential source in mind he said he'd be in touch.
Money changed hands.:) I left the tender though - not being sure how much the set of Harris wheels would be. Mr Lambert, I'll have a bone to pick with you next time I see you... ;)

The David Andrews Scot similarly remained un-purchased, as did the Slater's wheels I was anticipating purchasing.

In a parallel move my dad kindly lent me his source material on the two classes.

When I got home I had a message about the Harris wheels - no joy. So back to 'Plan A' and I'll fiddle a set of Slater's wheels into play.

So, I've still got various bits and pieces to order, but we're underway. Next stop is to have a jolly good look at the reference material and work out what detail variations I'm going to need.

And what has Mr. Dikitriki done to you?

Don't worry Graham - we've not fallen out! It's meant light-heartedly in that one bit of info that Richard provided off-list wasn't, in the strictest sense, accurate. Unfortunately it related to the presence (or otherwise) of somewhere to put the sound chamber in the Finney 'Duchess'. I actually owe him a beer or three for the help he's given...

:oops::shit:

Sorry

Still, you didn't actually purchase the wrong kit..... but then, you can't have too many Duchesses anyway (I have 4 :)) .

It must be the early-onset anno dominitis.

I shall look forward to you documenting your build - and the fitting of the speaker in the cavernous boiler - did I mention that there was room?

I'd quite happily provide inaccurate information for a beer or three ;)
Seems like a fair arrangement...

Erm... :D

Just because you have so many "Duchess of ..." :( there is no need to wind up the natives...
Indeed, it was the inference that at least one of the old dears was a 'cavernous boiler' which disturbed me...

A little more progress today (although most is financially painfull and/or theoretical) - 2off WD tenders are on their way together with a NQLTRT Royal Scot detail kit.

With reference materials to hand I'm now working out wheel details for the Duchess and inside motion for the Scot. Simple it isn't...

I'm not sure if it's of interest, but JPL Models of Manchester do grey cast iron wheels, which he will turn up for you too.

They are MUCH cheaper than the AGH ones, but as I've never seen but one set of AGH wheels, can't comment.

They seem to use the same method of axles etc.

Worth a look, if Slaters don't appeal?

Yeah the JPL wheels came up on another thread here and I'm tempted if I can confirm that the 6'9" 21 spoke PB wheel is the right style (with a 'v' rim) for a Coronation. Ther catalogue is occasionally vague on such issues...

Just looking at the JPL catalogue I bought at Telford, their wheels use the same fitting method as Slaters: square-ended axles and 2.5mm Allen screw.

It doesn't explain how they are insulated, but it DOES say that normal practice is for one side insulated.

Prices around £26 per axle for drivers, turned, £23 for bogies etc.
