Prototype Peek at a Peak

Which class of loco and water tanked or not?

Best I have after a quick check. I think all Peaks are virtually the same 'below' decks. Some had their water tank removed before fitting of air reservoirs so you'd need to check your intended loco and dates etc.

Complete shot in the dark this but...can anybody point me in the direction of a clear shot of the underframe between the bogies prior to fitting the later air cylinders i.e. as built. I ask 'cos one of my 'projects' is to backdate the air fitted Bachmann model. This enquiry come from beyond the back of the class as I'm not really up to speed on this 'modern' stuff...

John,

The Peaks were all built with air brakes on the loco - the conversion to 'dual brake' meant that they could haul air-braked trains. I therefore respectfully submit that the underframe/brake arrangements on the locos may not have changed...

Or (as a secondary thought) are your referring to brake air reservoirs? In which case they're more likely to change (but I thought they were internal on Peaks...?)...

I thought Class 44 were vacuum braked only & Class 45/46 were dual braked:confused:.............I'm probably totaly wrong though :))

As built :-
Shallow battery box each side flanking a deeper water tank
See above

Modified :-
Water tank removed, battery boxes remain

Dual brake :-
Air tanks added below battery boxes each side

Class 44 Vac only, Class 45/46 Vac then Dual braked.

Phill I think the class44 loco's had air brakes for the loco's only not the train. They had a proportional valve fitted which applied the Vacuum for the train at the same time as the loco air brakes were applied.

All locos have "straight air" which is air brakes but for the loco only.

This is a cab of a 46, levers from left to right are: train brake, horn by the window, straight air, (red end) is the power handle, small black handle closest is direction control (FWD, EO - Engine Only, REV, OFF).

Locos which are "Vac only" and not dual braked then the train brake valve (left hand side) is different.

So much like a 47, can you still put the loco in direction and open the throttle wide, if you can try it at night and watch it's amazing.

Ah!.......that's the beastie i.e. the water tank.....I couldn't make out from the photos I had if it was circular or, as it is, a box shape......thanks for the info chaps......

Great pics, particularly like the inside Derby works shot  lots of kids about and not a hardhat in sight ... HSE nightmare!

The body panel rippling on peaks seems far worse than any other type, I wonder why that is?

Some very handy pictures Steve C, especially as Royal Tank Regiment is the one I picked for my JLTRT build and I was having trouble with some of the underframe details.

Gareth, if you could post some of the cab interior, it would really help me as well.

Thanks.

Sean.

Not necessarily a HSE nightmare - just days when people knew how to behave, to be responsible for their own actions and that not every 'accident' (sic) had to be someone else's fault......
