Might I add that Steve has been a large part of the driving force for furthering things on West Mersea in recent months, and the brains behind the ballast..

Ah, that's what they want you think, but maybe it isn't...

Listen, just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that they aren't after you anyway...

Thanks for the kind interest in the ballasting, but its only the standard glue dropper method... just rather more than I'm used to!

The main requirement is patience, and the ability to look only at the next couple of feet, not the whole layout.

We use Gaugemaster '00' ballast, a water spray and diluted white glue, ( 4 water:1 glue ). Meths is added to both solutions, less bubbles than Fairy Liquid.

I use a 1/4" stiff Hogs-Hair brush and a wooden block faced with Foam to manoeuvre and smooth down the ballast, with a combination of tapping, dragging and twisting actions.... it does get quicker the more you do!

We have acquired a stock of genuine Mid-Suffolk ash, which we plan to use as a top dressing in appropriate places to represent the ash and clinker widely used by the GER and LNER well into the 50s. Experiments are ongoing to find suitable ways to apply it.

The sleepers and rails have already received a sprayed base colour, and will be finished off with applications of pigments to tone in and weather.

I had the pleasure of talking with Steve at Railex this past weekend and Steve enlightened me in regard to progress on West Mersea together with details of his other projects. The Wantage Tramway has been mentioned in earlier entries to this thread... Steve described how he is modelling the "flat-bottom" track of the prototype (which has an interesting challenge in respect of the fishing of joints). I do hope that Steve will be along soon to provide a detailed description of his methods for creating the fishplates and the associated nuts and bolts.... must be something to do with the water down at West Mersea.

regards, Graham
