As Jordan says, it's in keeping with the typical look of the the uncleaned/uncared for, sooty stained inner city/large town back street areas. All it really lacks are the wire meshed windows (if there are any at all) and the metal doors.

looks realy effective 'as is' however, a touch of mortar here and there would not go amiss, together with some green slime down the join where the downpipe will be.

cheers

I think I agree with Mike that you would be able to see some mortar. Do like the idea of green slime and other watery dribbles.

Mortar is in hand;) im just experimenting with washes to subdue it, if the mortar is too light the wall is like a chessboard :)) slimy dribbles are also on the way, i just need a good way of sealing the surface before I apply them

I have had problems wiping off previous layers of acryilic trying to add mortar :headbang:.......I would be interested in your solution ;).............never had these problems with enamel :))

The problem isn't the acrylic comming off, it is the wash soaking into the Mdf. I apply mortar dry and spray water onto the surfactant to activate it, I find a damp mix just too abrasive

I see, that wouldn't work for me as the surface is vertical:(

Cynric I remember an episode when the villains run off through some sidings being pursued by Regan and Co they are being repeated on Sky at the mo isn't that a good cameo scene to copy it had two levels and a main line and the baddies ran over all of them

Here are some of the test pieces taken in daylight
First - grey primer my usual acrylic mix and powered mortar. on the left with matt ronseal varnish brushed on and on the right without. im hoping it might seal the surface a little better than the Alclad

The primer makes a real difference..... same colours on each side

a close up of some dribbling tests

the thing is that there are so many variables you just have to play about.

I do know someone who would sculpt some masters... Hmmm, dunno what the demand would be though

I think I like the black mortar the best, the cream mortar is nice and is realistic but not on this type of structure. It makes the bricks look too soft and worn, but then I don't know what I'm talking about.:bowdown:

more gluing....

the spine is up, it just needs a couple of spacers for the join which I need to slacken off

It is giving me some grandiose ideas of raised embankments and the West London line

That is bringing to mind all sorts of gross visions  mostly involving sneezing on the model,
Many years ago, not long before it was retired from the exhibition circuit, I was operating Trevor Nunn's Wicken. As this was set in the Fens, he decided to make it look damp in places, using stragetically placed pools of gloss varnish.

One of the host club's members came past, with his wife. She looked at the scenery particularly near a particularly "damp" patch, and without thinking, uttered the first thing which came to her mind:
"Oh dear, someone has sneezed on the layout."

Trevor and I collapsed, but the club member quietly ushered his wife away...

Looking at the screwed joint in the shot above it just looks fugly and poorly engineered so...... fire up autocad and.....

replace the piece with slots....
IMG_4800.JPG

Make a 'comp to hold it all together

IMG_4801.JPG

Ah, much nicer

yes I know im a bit sad, but I hate bodged solutions

Just thinking, how will you marry up the join on the under arch brickwork to the vertical brickwork?
We'll see ;)
If anybody could tell me what the foor of the portakabin should look like id be pleased to know..... im guessing some sort of bitumen sheet
