A thought crossed my mind during the evening - what adhesive will adhere the balance weights (which would need to be treated to the same blackening process) to the spokes - what treatment/preparation is needed other than 'roughing up' with a blade/file?

I'll do some experimenting tomorrow.

cheers

Mike

ps - will also need to treat the ends of the retaining screws, which thankfully, are also steel.

Shouldn't need any as the chemical black etches the metal.. I've used chemical black very successfully as a primer in the past.

So did I until the last batch, dilution is key, as is the wash/soak in clean water afterward.

MD

I have used a dilute solution for years. For Slaters wheels. I always soak in dilute brass black first to do the bosses but usually that does the rims as well. Steel black does not work well on brass or nickel silver
For loco frames and bodies I have used the same solution for a long time which I just decant back into a plastic 4 pint milk carton after use. I find the 4 pints enough to cover a 4-4-0 and tender in an old Tupperware box. Every so often it needs topping up with a bit more water and a drop or two of Birchwood Casey. I don't know what the exact dilution rate is but it must be quite weak. I have had the same bottle of Birchwood for years!

However as Mickoo says you must rinse off in clean water and dry quickly.

Although of indifferent quality I came across this photograph while scanning my grandfather's negatives. Taken at the Bluebell Railway in the early 1960's.
