7mm The Derby Line: Basford North

I've made a mock up of the signal box for Basford North, it w as along box with 99 levers. It is not like any other GN box I can find. I suspect it was a new build in 1898/9. The closest photo I have is of one end, but I had a distant view of the back and an oblique view of the front so I've had to extrapolate the dimensions. I got it too high on the first pass.

Slow, but sure progress, and I'm making up the raised section of line where the station platforms extend out to the bridge over Vernon Road. Though I keep getting dragged out to do jobs in the garden! The builders merchant is closed at the moment, but I think I have enough stocks of material to keep me going for the moment..

It was an afternoons work to make up the track bed supports and prepare the baseboard. Vernon Road passes under just beyond the end of the platforms. Access holes have been cut below the trackbed to enable wiring activities. It's all just placed in position at the moment. The supports were squared up by using a router on both sides. All this was done outside as it creates phenomenal amounts of dust! I spent ages measuring and re-measuring, hopefully I've not go it wrong.

Looks amazing, all my woodworking is now finished on Church Norton but I did enjoy the process, and from what I can see of your work you are also enjoying this part of the build.

I also enjoy the track building, I even built the main running lines using C&L parts rather than using normal flexi track, are you doing the same? or are you not as sad as me :D.

There's some nice joinery Tony.

Fortunately I decided to go to Ridgeons on Monday and got 2 sheets of 12 mm ply and enough wood for a dozen legs, that should keep me going for a month or so.

Thanks chaps, the basic skills that I have are from my O level woodwork, copied from Norman Turner at the Wolves club -Stoke Summit and Charwelton and experience gained with Heyside. I'm running short of a few materials as the builders merchant is closed, so I'm being frugal with the resources that I have..

Flexi track on the running lines as there is so much of them! There are a lot of points to hand make, but once I get a production line going....

Looking good Tony, are you going for a lifting system similar to the old pub lifting hatch? That's what I settled on and so far I have never had any trouble with it. I have installed a handmade isolation device so that if it's raised it automatically cuts the power to the track from around 1 metre each side of the hatch. I made it a metre to cater for any locos with a stay alive in them.

A couple of afternoons work has seen the lifting section completed, and of course it is complicated by turnouts and crossings. A piece of art in itself.

The tongue fits in to a locating slot in the embankment. Like most of us - I've had back trouble, so there has to be a lifting section. Anyway it fits... I then have to create some sort of structure to support it when it is up.

wow, great solution!

You might consider adding some additional guides to lock the loose ends of the bridge in place. Considering the huge dimensions of you project, the "U" shaped part might move through the year so that you end with gaps in your bridge.

Some vertical guiding pins might do the job.

Hi Tony, great layout.

From your Wolves Club days I presume you knew \ know Rob Kinsey? I used to work with him at Staffs CC Highways.
