A couple of hoists on multi-storey warehouses snapped on the way to work this morning. The resolution isn't wonderful - it's asking a lot of my iPhone really - but the details of construction, and scale are fairly obvious.

So five weeks to go to Workington....

IMG_20251012_094842113.jpg
Having been laid up with a cold all week hasn't helped progress but the bridge is now finished just needs painting.

IMG_20251010_182625046_HDR.jpg
The other area of focus the week has been the trees.

IMG_20251010_182634429_HDR.jpg
The whomping willow was particularly fun to create.

IMG_20251011_170838831_HDR.jpg
And a few more trees at the other end of the layout.

IMG_20251011_173141841.jpg
All the trees are now off the layout and numbered up so I know where they go back

IMG_20251012_121700045.jpg
First coat of DIY tree bark.

The big elm gets a first coat.

And the willow.

You may get hits to the season Skeetsmere will be depicted in from the containers in the background...

Less than five weeks.....

Following discussion with @Herb Garden we've concluded that the planned fix (to use parts from another kit to create an underframe for the Dia.7 cattle vans) will not be sufficient as there's a 3-4mm discrepancy in width meaning new bufferbeam sections are required.

With the deadline on rapidly disappearing (10 days!) we've agreed not to rush the vans through and to focus on getting them right. This means they will not be completed before the upcoming shows but I will still be seeing the project through when time (and parts) permits.

As such, I will continue to post updates of those builds here as and when progress is made.

4 weeks to Workington....

Progress has been less obvious this week.... I thought it would be easy to paint brickwork and yet this has been a learning curve.

1st attempt too decorative.

IMG_20251015_212845560.jpgIMG_20251016_064407299.jpg

2nd attempt and then with more mortar...

this one is 0-16.5 as aslate wharf. Inspire by kings station on the tal-y-llyn. It should have been there last year but I was rushed into hospital this time last year and I had to put it back a year.
Just have some electrical jobs and ballast to put down. Hopefully it should be finished in the next few days.

The Llareggub I remember seeing elsewhere, but at the same sort of time so probably the same layout (!) was by Dave Rowe...I think it may still exist.
Simon.

Same Dylan Thomas 'joke' (I think there's been at least one more layout using the name - and certainly variants of 'something' all, backwards - since).

All this talk of Welsh Narrow Gauge is close to blasphemy on an East Anglian thread...

Not really related to the current mad panic to get the layout ready for its exhibitions...
Ooh, I don’t think talk of Welsh narrow gauge can be blasphemy anywhere, can it? . I very happily combine the two on a regular basis!

Well maybe here's something to tempt you....

IMG_20251020_065850952.jpg
Since returning from Leeds I've been able to start on the mill bridge

IMG_20251020_194759561.jpg
Also thanks to the modelling talents of John and Nigel @James Spooner the station end of the layout is starting to look a lot like something.

IMG_20251021_192549018.jpg

The station came for a trial fitting today alongside the cottage which arrived last week. There's three modellers involved in the buildings and despite hundreds of miles between us we've been able to build things that sit well together.

The middy feel is really starting to be noticeable

3.5 weeks to go!

Nice to meet you and Liver & Fry at Workshopwise today. I came away from the event inspired and with appreciation for the people who have overcome some of the challenges I still face with Princes St. Your layout is looking good, and a relatively small amount of work will visually transform it significantly. I don't think you should have any apprehension about it's forthcoming outing. From what I could see, the most of the time consuming work that will give it character has already been done. All the best, and hopefully I'll see it again next summer

cheers

Nice to meet you and Liver & Fry at Workshopwise today
It was good to meet you too Ian and thank you for your encouraging words.

Yes Workshop Wise has come and gone for another year and that was my 3rd as part of the organisation team

Back on Skeetsmere

IMG_20251022_065258596_HDR.jpg
The mill bridge work has continued

IMG_20251023_065300708_HDR.jpg
And by Thursday morning the first coats of paint were going on ... I think I'm getting the hang of styrene....IMG_20251023_173250517.jpg
With workshop wise looming the arrival of my old comrade @Liver & Fry on Thursday evening has been a godsend lots of help getting the layout ready on Friday plus all the transportation help as well.

Skeetsmere once again made it to Stannington for the EMGS Workshop Wise event. As part of the event I used Skeetsmere to demonstrate ballasting, landforming and setting the buildings into the scene so by the end of the event and much of the event's renowned catering this is the state of play.
