I'm looking for any information, pictures drawings etc of the USATC S160 locomotive used in Britain during WW2. I'm hoping to have a loco built in 7mm.
Any info would be great fully received
Thanks

Steve,

There are a couple of us hereabouts who are fans of the S160. (And S100 too, for that matter)
I've tried a few places and made no progress, but am wondering if there might be something in the Swindon Works drawings as many of the locos were prepared there after their journey across the pond.

I'd love to find more info and if I could find decent drawings would definitely develop a kit...

Steph,
I've got quite a few drawings already and I'm working with Pete Harvey about doing parts of the loco as an etch, The tender, cab and running plate all lend them selves to this method. Paul Hanna is my loco builder and he will probably scratch what we can't get but we are early days at the moment. I'm just trying to get as much info together first to make sure what ever we do get produced is right first time.
It's good to know that it's not just me who's interested in these ugly brutish but very captivating locomotives.

Yorkshire Dave of this parish has built one of the Model Loco (DJH) HO-scale kits and made a wonderful job of it as one of the Fort Eustis locos that never left the 'States. He's another one in stock; I hope I can persuade him to finish it in Czech condition  :

More here, for those who are interested.

Surprised to see your drawing is "Metric". I have an "S160" part completed in 4mm scale.

Mick,
Most of the drawings I've come across have been metricated by dint of the locos seeing more use in Europe than in the US (where they're virtually unknown) or the UK. I think the drawing Steve's posted is from a Czech publication...

There is a bit of blurb about these locos in the book the Cardiff railway by Eric Mountford , an
Oakwood Press publication . The first USA S160 class loco No 1609 arrived in Cardiff docks in November 1942 a lot of them were sent to Ebbw junction .

Is there anything perhaps in the Tourret books on War Department Locomotives?

Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War, R. Tourret, Tourret Publishing, ISBN 0-905878-06-X.
Or
United States Army Transportation Corps Locomotives
Published December 1977 by Tourret Publishing .
Or
The locomotives of the War Department and United States Army.
Published 1952.

Yes, there was an article in "Brill" many years ago. Some years ago, the K&WVRly published a nice little book on these engines.
Watchout for the detail differences between the different builders, especialy the valve gear. Mick.

Large numbers also passed through Eastleigh after arrival at Southampton. Later, other works were involved preparing them for their journey to France in 1944/45 via Dover.

I'm sure there was an article in BRILL mag some years back, I'll scan it when I find it.

Col, please may I have a copy of the scan as well?
Yes, as Steph has alluded to, I have built the DJH S160 in HO with another one waiting:D.

I have been gathering information on these locos for a few years now and so far I have both of Tourret's books as mentioned by Diafly. I also have a small book just over A5 size 80 pages - Over Here The Story of the S160 by R N Higgins ISBN 0 097224 00 8. First published in 1980 by Big Jim Publishing Ltd, Rochdale. I think this is the one referred to by Mick.

I did approach the Army museum in the US but they could only provide a few photographs of the locos operating on the the US Army's Fort Eustis camp.

The other option is to try and find out in which archive the Baldwin, Alco and Lima drawings ended up (if they still exist).

Detail differences do exist:confused: . The most noticeable being the stepped running plate on the drivers side to accommodate the screw reverser although these never ran in the UK as they were shipped directly to mainland Europe. Not to mention the different ash pan for oil fired variants.

I would be nice to have an O scale version :) to finish as one of the six allocated to Exmouth Junction between December 1943 and January 1944.

Incidentally the K&VWR S160 is currently undergoing a overhaul which I managed to photograph in Haworth Yard (a stones throw from me) just before it entered the workshop.

The archives of the various USA builders still exist, but off top of my head I'm unsure where. Yes, the book I mentioned is the K&WVRly publication.
Not the best picture, but here is one at Springhead, Hull. I have not checked but the diamond works plate suggests a Lima build. Mick. S160.jpg

A quick web search as found the various archives, Baldwin Locomotives, Lima Locomotives and ALCO Locomotives will lead you to the various sites. Mick.

I contacted Lima loco works and they passed me on to the California state railroad museum, I've emailed about drawings but I'm yet to hear from them.

The small book I have - Over Here the story of the S160 - has this on the front cover.

1712 shunting at Bishops Stortford in 1943. The book states the photo is courtsey of 'Steam and Sail'.
