That's the only colour pic I've seen I've got it in a book, yesterday's railways. Still it will be the one I use for weathering, well not me Fred Lewis
Does it have any drawings that could be scanned?

Märklin Fan Club in Italy has some photos of S160s. Some we've probably seen before but most are as they were running in Italy. However, there are some interesting photo of them operating in wartime.

At present I try and obtain as many photos of them as I can in Europe during the 1942-46 period.

Good link that Dave, lots of interesting pics. It's a shame that the last posting of a lovely drawing (on p2) is of a Vulcan 'Liberation' (UNRRA 1-D) rather than an S160...

For the 7mm build I would try and source parts from the US, namely Precision Scale. I've used these on my O scale S100 (SR USATC) to backdate the old Oakville kit to finish the loco as modified by the Southern but retaining US fittings.

These are cast brass and include items such as: Nathan Injectors, Whistles, Air Pumps etc etc and Andrews trucks for the tender. I have thieir O scale catalogues and all three parts Diesel, Steam and Passenger and Freight car detailing parts are the size of a yellow pages directory:).

I've come across the metropolitan models model, but there would be a difference in scale as US European O is different to UK O.
I will try and source a precision models catalogue.

Yes, they're Andrews trucks alright :D - suitable for the S160.

I've placed a request to Syracuse University, NY to their special collections where some ALCO records ended up.

There's a nice O scale, and I mean 1:43.5 exact, of one in the reserve collection at the National Railway Museum in York......

Guys,

Just found this video on YouTube showing the locos (in colour) at Fort Eustis:
Steve, that bogie will be 1:48rather than 1:43.5...! Incidentally, the Metro' loco might be 1:43.5, but is more likely to be 1:45 I agree. I've just done the sums and realised that the difference in length over buffers is under 15mm.

I have to agree that getting one in 7mm would be good though. I'd be interested to see what you guys turn up in terms of drawings and other info though - can you please let me/us know how you each get on?

Cheers,

Steph

You have jogged my memory, yes a very nice 7mm model of a S160 at the NRM, set out if I recall correct in a war time recovery scene, only snag, all the blokes were kitted out in "Red Vests". Again another memory recall, years ago, in the "MRN" there was a photo of a quility "Live Steam" 7mm S160, I wonder if the same model? Mick.

Nice short film you've found Steph.

I could live with the Metropolitan brass version..... and it's finished as an oil burner to boot. 1:45 is closer than 1:48 although not quite 1:43.5.

Steve - you'll have to find about 20 USATC bogie tank cars for the loco to haul.

Thanks guys you've all provided a lot of help and keep posting. I will order a set of the bogies. Pete Harvey is working away on turning the drawings we've found so far into a 3D model to see what can be etched.
There does seem to be a fair amount of interest in a 7mm model so we shall see how we get on.
What ever does I'm still hoping I will get a model in the end. I've contacted slaters to see about wheels and there might be another well known kit manufacturer who may be able to supply certain parts for the project.

Any pictures of the tank cars??
Steph, great video.

The tank cars looked like this except they would not have had the hazchem board.

I suspect scale, HO at least, drawings could be found in one of Benno Wiesmüller's books on German freight stock as these vehicles ended up in mainline service in Europe during epoch III.

Or scale 'em up from the Fleischmann/Kleinbahn models...
