Hi D1054,

as I am thinking about getting an MMP 08 in the near future I would like you see/hear your views and thoughts on the kit having 'just opened the box' as it were.

regards

Mike

Hi Mike, I have to say that I'm probably not the best to pass comment on this because this will be the first serious brass kit I've tackled in a good years. I've put a few wagons and coaches together, and the DJH A3 Tender and Main Frames, but this kit looks to be a different sort of challenge :D First impressions are very good. The etches are very fine, clean and crisp, well packed in a BIG box, AND (most importantly!) it looks as though the instruction set is quite thorough (6 pages of A4), with many excellent exploded diagrams (13 x A4 sheets :)), and some prototype pix to assist. I reckon on a good year's work here for me with all my other commitments..... I'll upload some close-up pix for you if you like? The kit was recommended to me, but I certainly wouldn't class this as a beginner-intermediate kit -- there's only one big part, and that's the cast resin roof which is OK, but not as sharp as what I get with JLTRT kits.

Overall impression is VG, and I've seen the finished article which is quite superb if put together well.

Mine will be all flying, with sound and lighting (and maybe some form of autocouplers - anyone any ideas on these?)

All the best,

Ian A (D1054)

I have an MMP 08 in the queue, its what you would expect from MMP lots of very nice etches and tons of detail - not for the faint hearted  The downsides to me are the outside cranks which are multiple laminations of brass :headbang: and the coupling rods which are also laminations, can you see a pet hate
But I know somebody locally with a pantograph milling machine (  Dikitriki   ) so hopefully I can do something about that before hand.

Maybe we should get together and make a 13  (Tinsley was my fave depot - yet all my engines are from the Western (save the 40, but even they regularly made it to Gloucester where, I think, they used to be swapped for a hydraulic? [Did they get to Laira or even Penzance? - Maybe later on on the SW to Leeds or Liverpool services? - Anyone got a photo of a 40 at Plymouth or Penzance? (40145 excepted, please) ;) ])

How did I get this topic from MMP 08's to 40's at Penzance?

Tee hee, how to become popular :D

I too have an MMP 08 in the stock pile, one in which the bonnet sides are resin, as well as the roof. I thought (still do) that it was an excellent kit at a bargain price. I acquired at the time machined brass outside brass cranks from Martin Finney, though i didn't tell him it was for an 08 :) but I haven't checked how accurate they are for the 08.

Cynric - you're welcome to avail yourself of the miller, but it will be a while before it's in full working order.

Cheers

Richard

Im pretty certain the cranks would be incorrect. I think Dan fancies an 08 as well so that looks like 6 pairs of cranks and 6 sets of rods
I wont be building it for a while yet - I have to work through some of the backlog

Unfortunately all mine got destroyed years ago which is a shame seeing as I worked as a steward on the railtour that took the first class 40 to Penzance. That was D200 after it had been saved and it was on a tour run by T&N Railtours.
