Thanks for your comments everyone

I like the little green engine in the background - is it DCC?

I think my boy would like it to be, how is it no matter how much you try toyes end up everywhere, especially in the middle of the floor in the dark when you've got bare feet :))

I particularly like B920059 .......could you describe how you achieved the rust & weathering effects ?

Cheers Phill

These techniques are certainly not new ones, but ones i've 'borrowed' over time. The main basis is no other than Martyn Welch's bible, The Art of Weathering. I have also found recent inspiration in MRJ and Craig Welsh's articles, although I think it's a bit late for me to move to acrylics as i've got lorry loads of enamels. All the wagons are first finished ex works and then worked on from there, the rust is a mixture of humbrol, matt black (33), Bauxite(133) and Gunmetal (53) with Leather (62) and Orange (82) worked in at intervals. Oh and don't forget a helping of talcum powder. The rust mix is stippled on to the wagon which completely trashes the brush and by the time you've finished it will look like a chimney sweeps brush but, however this helps to add little scratchs of rust and small areas of rust to represent a work worn, knocked about and unloved look. The flat areas of rust are then brought to life with dry brushing and when dry a wash over with talcum powder again. I still have a lot to learn and the wagons above still need more work but overall so far I'm happy with the results,

Thanks Mick :)

I particularly like the rust effects within the panels of this vehicle, do you work the mix mentioned above around the edges of the panels or do the whole panel & clean it back to the base colour in the middle of the panel ?

Cheers Phill

I work it around the edges as cleaning it back seems to look a bit too man made. Whilst I'm carefully stippling around the edges I add tiny amounts of leather and orange to slighty alter the colours, I've found the rougher you are the better. Hope this helps,

Cheers Mick

Mick, keep up the good work. Lets hope we can both soon make a start on "Holderness Drain North". I have gathered a fair bit of 7mm stuff. Mick.

Hi Mick, Would you fancy doing a run through of your weathering technique as used on the bolster etc.?

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. I don't mind going through it at all Rob, although I do feel a bit of a fraud in as much as they are techniques practiced by many others and are certainly not exclusively mine. I take my inspiration ( and techniques ) from other chaps on here really, Col Dowling, JB, Adrian Marks, the Guv, Fred Lewis and many more. I suppose to be honest I'm saying don't take my word for it and i'm not forgeting my place so to speak.

That microwave will have to go if you're going to get the track round the corner!

:)):)) I must sort out some kind of display to photograph on soon :headbang: In any case the wife won't tollerate much more intrusion into her domain ! Rob, when I have a little more time i'll write up a bit on my limited weathering experience, products etc..

Ok, an update after what seems like an age since I did any modelling and even longer since I got onto the PC and had a good look through here. I've been finishing off a couple of Slater's Vans in F/S

And here's what I've managed to get done at York Show whilst on the S7 stand. The brass overlays and W-irons are as you've probably guessed, MMP, which I really do like. A great addition to the pre-printed Slater's bodies. I had a bit of trouble first time round with this one, using evo stick to fix them is a fiddly job. Following advice I'm going to try first using spray mount to stick them to 10thou plasticard and then fix them to the sides. I'll let you know how it goes

P.S there's a great article in an old S7 newsletter about photographing your models and yes I haven't read it yet :))

Hi Mick are you using the MMP underframe kit too?. I have the W Irons and underframe kit but still need to get the overlays for the inside (I wasn't sure exactly which wagon I had when I ordered from David so had to wait until I went up to the cottage again to have a look at the kit:oops:)

Hi Rob,

I have six of these on the bench at the minute and I have the W irons, underframe detail and overlaysfrom MMP to hopefully make them up into something pretty nice. As I mentioned i've got a couple of ideas I want to experiment with for the overlays, so we'll see how it goes. It's the first time I've used the MMP W irons and I think they look the buisness, although the sprining seems a little robust, I see what the first finished wagon rides like. I'd be interested to know how you've found them. Also I haven't forgot about your weathering request, I'll post soon:thumbs: ,
