Hi Rob
What colour is the NER horsebox meant to be? Teak?
I know nothing about the NER but that looks very yellow. Perhaps its the ambient light or camera.
I‘m struggling to represent Stratford brown at the moment which is ill defined by various authors.
Any thoughts?
Nice model btw

Hi Bob,

It's what the LNER describe as 'coaching stock brown', it's the colour that the LNER painted coaches and NPCS vehicles which had previously been painted various colours by their original companies. This particular horsebox would have been NER lake originally.

I agree it does look a bit yellow in the photos, it's darker than that in reality.

Thank you, but what make/colour is it?
Goes to show photography doesn’t supply absolute authenticity
cheers

Sorry Bob,

It's Vallejo Model Color Flat Earth Acrylic (RAL 8008) Vallejo Ref no 70.983
Thanks, my local store has a rattle can of RAL8007, it looks close enough and in any case no one seems to know what Stratford brown really looked like and colour photos are very inconsistent.
I’ll go with this, I’ve been prevaricating far too long.

Hi,

Nice NER horse box. A couple of weeks back you said that you had seen some photos of Diagram 67 boxes in BR livery (albeit very dirty). Any chance you could provide a link or reference for these - I have one to build (in 4mm) but have never seen any evidence that they actually lasted to Nationalisation (the D&S instructions usually list this, but they don't for that kit). As my chosen period is around 1949, I would very much like to see a photo of one taken round about that time.

Many thanks.
Tim

Hi Tim,

One of them I found on Steve Banks site in his horseboxes section - Fourth image down on this page - https://www.steve-banks.org/prototype-and-traffic/129-horse-race-traffic#close

The other I got from the NERA Association (I'm a member).

I am not sure whether to add this here or in the "Just for a Laugh" thread

Back in 2015 (earlier on this thread) I scratch built , a North Eastern Railway Shunters Truck.

I built it from an outline drawing of a shunters truck published in the book "Railway Snowploughs in the North East" by David and Claire Williamson, .

The history of which, until looking through the book for the details to include in a recent post on another forum, I had completely misinterpreted.

I had 'read' that the shunters truck was built in 1907 from a Snowplough.

What it 'actually says' is that the snow plough was re built from the shunters truck in 1907, which in turn had been re built from a C2 open wagon in 1902.

All of which means that it only existed as a shunters truck for five years. Those five years being at least eighteen years before the LNER came into being so it would have never existed in my chosen livery of LNER Engineers Oxford Blue...

Now that I know, I plan to repaint it into NER livery once I can hopefully confirm what the livery actually was. So far I have ascertained that it was unique and was allocated the Diagram Number M1*

*(information gleaned from a single paragraph in North Eastern Record Volume 2).

Rob, Hello. The effect you've achieved on all the metalwork and the unpainted woodwork is delightful - please don't lose it in the repaint :-(

Hi Rob,
"Now that I know, I plan to repaint it into NER livery once I can hopefully confirm what the livery actually was."

Yes, I have to say "Good Luck" with that! I've just had a look in North Eastern Record V2 for you, and in the wagons section, it does relate the tale of the Dia M1 Shunters Truck, in existence, as you say from 1902 to 1907. (Incidentally, the Snow Plough it was used for, was for use on the Tyneside electrified lines - Dia U18.) However I can find no mention of the vehicle in the liveries section.
I do have some Livery Notes compiled by J. M. Fleming of the NERA way back in the 1970's (Issued with Express No 46 (currently we are waiting for 258!), but as you can imagine one solitary oddball wagon doesn't get a mention. These notes were a summary of preliminary research that ended up as NE Record. It's also difficult to know what "group" of vehicles it might have been grouped with, for example, was it painted the same as an ordinary wagon, was it grouped in with Brake Vans, or Other Departmental Wagons??? I also have some of the many handouts that used to come regularly with NE Express, but no mention of it there. I've been a member of the NERA since the mid 1970's, my membership no is 675!! I've never, that I can recall, seen a picture of it either.
The only people I can think of who might know are the Addyman's, John and David, both stalwarts of the NERA, or possibly the Williamsons. I've asked Mick Nicholson to ask JA when he speaks to him next. Also, the NERA do some facsimile Wagon Diagram books, it may get a mention in one of those.

On an entirely separate note, I see on Platform1 that you are building an NER ES1 electric loco in 7mm. I look forward to some progress on that, as I bought one from Mike and Judith at the York Show!

All the best,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin,

Your input is much appreciated. I have already enquired of Tom Burnham and he wasn't able to find anything. As you say if I could pin it down to the other wagons it was grouped with I would have a fighting chance.

In the interim I have made a start on painting it in grey, mainly to cover the blue but I thought it a reasonable starting point

I do wonder why they only ever built the one, I can only guess by it's short lifespan that it was an unsuccessful experiment.
