A little update on the colour modulation taking shape. Hopefully this clearly illustrates the effect of using white and black undercoats. There are 6 different shades of blue used so far. Next step is to add the transfers, then add a few more shades of blue (with a brush) to pick out the raised details. Can you spot where the different shades are?

I like your use of different undercoats, its a really useful technique. As a kid I discovered this when painting military figure faces and it was a complete revelation using bold patches of colour on top of the undercoat rather than trying to mix, apply and work in the different shades on top of the flesh colour. Its simple, quick and very effective, which suits me as painting is easily my least favourite part of modelling (because I'm not very good at it ...

The "wood" finish is not yet ticking a box for me... the appearance of the decking is that of fresh cut Utile and seems to be compatible with the fresh / recent blue livery. If the decking is meant to be pine / softwood then I expect a more yellow feel to the colouring.
The crossbeams (bolsters?) appearance shows a tendency towards a pink colour - what timber did you use for these components.
I am impressed by the "graining" from use of the etch mask, what do you think of the result?

Interesting, I'm not getting that effect at all.

I've had limited success making brass look like wood and it's typically involved a mixture of washes, drybrushing, scumbling/graining and goodness knows what else. I suspect you're a good way there and (assuming it's your intention) then the weathering will do much to sort the final finish of the timber. Perhaps less browns and more greys?

I agree good on the grain but colouring is too clean and 'brand new fence' looking for me at the moment. I have to say it's less brown in reality but still needs more grey adding to it. I'll think I'll make a wash with grey and pink to make it look more like worn wood. It's quite enjoyable doing it and so far now "oh schizer" moments.
I don't know what type of wood the cross beams are. They were included with the kit.

I'm not seeing any pink either.
Tom, as others have said, it's looking good, but the deck looks too brown. A bit of light grey will go a long way to improving the look of it.

Hi Tom,
You have a bit of a quandary here... the finish of the wood has to be believable in the context of the underframe colouring. As the wagon is at the moment the solebars have a clean appearance and could be not long out of shops... in which case the decking is appropriate for some hardwoods (eg. Utile). If the decking is newish pine then the wood ought to be of a more yellow colour. Weathering / distressing / ageing the blue paint shall move the decking colour towards grey / silver.
As Mickoo has observed, some loads are going to leave their mark quicker than other loads... for example:- oil spillage is going to stain the timber very quickly whereas timber loads are going to darken the wood more gradually.

I think the wood effect is super. A little weathering will blend the cross beams into the deck perfectly.

Hi,
I'm producing my wagon as a slightly more recent version. By which time some of the decals had been modified compared to those available on the transfer sheet. The 4 updated transfers that I'd like to include on my wagons are these ones:
Dimensions can be supplied so does anyone fancy/have the equipment/ability to produce these please?

We may have to talk Tom as my range are going to need transfers sooner or later.
Scale Model Transfers - http://www.scalemodeltransfers.co.uk do most of what is needed but not all. My reference photography shows all sorts of little details.
I have the software to do it and I have an understanding of how to do them

I have used Frank for transfers in the past
and very pleased I was with them, but I thought that he had 'retired' due to ill health some time ago and have been seeking alternatives (Precision have 'eased back', again for family/health reasons and Railtec take forever, even for a quote!). I have now been experimenting with Crafty Computer paper, but have to rely on 'Trade' for the white lettering - on a clear background.

I seem to remember hearing something to that effect but the website is still up and it doesn't say you can't order anything.
The way I was thinking of going was to use the sheet from Scale Model Transfers and then produce a small transfer sheet that contains everything else.
As you say white is always the problem.
If it comes down to having to do all the decals then I suppose I will have to bite the bullet and do them but it would be useful to talk to someone like Tom at the same time and cram as much as possible into the design work.
