Bow Creek Wharf. c.1946. S7

It's great to see how Bow Creek Wharf will come together Col. The pictures of the Y4 and Y5 are fantastic, full of character and atmosphere. I particularly like the spark arrestor on the Y4, very erm ergonomic !! I have a picture of a J71 similarly fitted on King George Dock, Hull. I can only guess they were fitted for the same purpose, for the J71 it was for when shunting in the timber yard, pit proprs and the like, would the Y4 be the same? I also like the oil cans and buckets on the footplate of the Y5. I'm really looking forward to seeing these little work horses take shape,

I plan to build 8081 as you see her, complete with spark arrestor, I must admit I personaly will get more enjoyment in building this than a mainline pacific.

I look forward to seeing Bow Creek develop - I think at least a sound fitted ex GE engine with a Westinghouse pump must be included - just to hear the pump operating.

Will you be posting a thread on the building of the Thames barge?

Afraid it's steam brakes only on the wharf shunters Dave, you'd have to walk down the line back to the exchange sidings and over to the shed by the station to hear a pump, and that would probably be on a passenger "Buck" or an F6 taking water.

The barge and lighter builds are some way off yet, but yes I will certainly be posting the builds, the layout boards, buildings , etc will be first.

Good news Col. Like you I think little Dock engines of this kind have bags of character and I too prefer to study and build these rather than the big mainline enigines,

Not so sure I should admit it aloud but I received an Ace kit for the Y5 as a Christmas surprise. I was planning on investing in one of Andy Beaton's kits when he releases it but I will have to make the best of this one seeing as it was a gift.

Andy's now got the full range of Y5 castings in his range, so if the Ace kit falls short in any of those areas...

Richard, Can I Did it have lost wax slidebars/crossheads? They are not included in the kit (etched slide bars and whitemetal crossheads supplied with it) but Ace will supply them and I wonder if Andy's will be more accurate for the prototype for a similar price.

[Rant mode]What a good way to loose customers!, there's no point having a web page if all the links are dead or no prices given. His Britannia looks nice and until today had never heard of his locos. It's not as though fotopic went bust yesterday! They went bust over a year ago which means all the links have been dead at least that long. Sorry, just really ticked off with some of these suppliers who just keep nothing up to date, the world is moving on and the web is the new shop window.

In true WT scatter gun mode I like the look of both of those LNER tanks, also looked at LMS Kitson/BR 0-4-0ST today, always had a soft spot for them.

And!, Yes Richard, I am single handedly trying to kick start the 7mm loco economy LOL.

Back to the OP, very jealous of a dockside scene, drew out loads for a RMWeb layout competition a few years back but all euro docks where they still have trains on quay sides and lots of little dinky shunters and huge cargo wagons LOL.

I'm afraid I don't recall - but can there be any doubt that Andy's will be more accurate? Even if they are a little more expensive, I would go for them every time.

The slidebars and crossheads are brass and £9 for a pair of each.

Just caught up with this Col - great plan You've got some cracking ingredients in the mix, I'm looking forward to seeing this grow into fruition and getting a persons eye level view down Boat Street
Y5's and quays, I've come over all un-necessary...

Railways and docks have always got me going mate. Boat Street did or does ( not checked) exist, I've just moved it half a mile.

Nope, not the rail cranes but might be able to dig up something on that tri pod one at the end of the quay, we had two of those when I first started, monsters to drive, actually bloody scary really, all clutches, pedals and levers! The drawing office is bound to have at least a schematic of rough sizes etc, maybe even some detailed drawings, though they may have been sent to the new owners when we took them down.



Same crane but maybe a larger jib and on pedestals but fundamentally I think they are the same crane from the same manufacturer. Will check back through my PoF books I think these were installed in the late 40s early 50s and get back in a moment. Have a handful more photos if your interested.

Addendum, it's a Scotch Derrick crane, built 1966 with 32t at 90' capacity.

Thanks Richard, that was my thought, but to be honest having bought a few castings from Andy I don't think that they will be more expensive

Thanks Adrian, you have just confirmed my suspicions, the ACE ones are £19.50 a set and I suspect that they will be generic across a range of their kits.

Here's a better view of one of those period derrick steam cranes - this one at Porcra Quay, Aberdeen. Have also found just one photo of a rail mounted steam crane with curved jib similar to those you posted - a Thomas Smith crane but it's a bit younger. If nothing else it may help with scheming out a suitable jib!

A better view of the jib - looks to be similar construction even if the curve is not the same as the the early crane in the foreground of your view - guessing they would date from 1870s through 1900 vintage?

The fixed crane type is called a Scotch Derrick.
