Paul Moore has been busy again:
We are used to seeing perfect printed 'decoration' on mass produced locomotives, and so it is a sobering thought that the professional painters have to "draw" every line and every corner. I marvel at such workmanship and dedication, particularly as I know that no one will ever become wealthy from doing it for a living.

Hi Larry and all
I know a man, now in his 50s who trained as a sigh writer with Ansels Brewery, Birmingham doing the pub signs. When that stopped he did other things including the decorations canal boats and was on briefly TV, I think about be 20 years ago. Your comment about becoming wealthy, The owners would pay many £thousands for the boat but moan at small sum for all the decorating.
He gave up the painting and does window cleaning, gutter cleaning and other odd jobs for a much higher income.

Allen

I've been asked many times to do paid commissions for buildings in 4mm and 7mm. To build and finish from scratch to a standard I'm happy with takes 100s of hours, yet people only want to pay £20-£50 for a building. They always seem upset that you don't want to do it for 10p/hour!

More than happy to do skills swaps with others, and have previously made buildings in exchange for track or other work. That can work well.

Well now, I've slipped to page 4 so I must be well overdue to post something!

Since the last post I have finished the Schools and 4 LNWR 6- wheel carriages (all ex Northstar). There are 3 more 6 wheelers approaching completion but I have just finished the 45' full brake and the M52 Driving vehicle.

Next I need to finish the 8F which has been stalled for far too long. Then it will be a build - and instruction write up - of the revised etches for the LNER O4/8.

That full brake is very nice , who's kit is it ?

I am horrified to discover that the 8F build had been stalled for over 7 months...... Must get my finger out.

I now have a functioning chassis. Clearances are very tight.

Pinch points are the usual crosshead/front coupling rod boss but there are others:
Connecting rod - second wheel coupling rod boss
Connecting rod - expansion link.

We pack this kit with threaded crankpin bushes as it would be impossible to build without.

I found it necessary to thin the connecting rod big end boss so that the connecting rod misses the expansion link and thin the back of the connecting rod so that it misses the coupling rod boss.

But it works!

Just out of the erecting shop and on its way for painting, an 8F.

A nice kit: not the easiest build due to chassis clearance issues, but the all went together well. Surprisingly we don't sell that many of these. Perhaps waiting for Ellis Clark..............

My last ride just a couple of weeks before the Delph Donkey service ended in 1955 was in one of the LNWR M52 50' side-corridor driving trailers as in post #507. With no doors to the corridor, they were rather unusual. They had corridor connections when built, but 3410 had the connection removed at the driving end.

Thanks Larry. I have asked Warren to leave off the corridor connection so that the customer can fit if required.

Just a thought. My train spotting days in the 1940-50 period, I never thought green suited the A4s especially on the Queen of Scots and tees Tyne Pullman’s. Blue seemed my preferred choice. Curiously I thought blue GWR kings ghastly, perhaps it was the subtlety of green…….but it was a long time ago!!!!!!! Hornsey bank and a bicycle are just a memory.
