My lateral thinking gear is well out of practice at the moment! I'd never thought of a temporary outside track on top of a garden wall. And we have a low garden wall which runs right across the front of the house on a gentle curve. As the domestic authorities are not enthusiastic about an outside track (and in truth space is at a premium) an annual "garden wall running session" may not be out of order. Could even do one for 7mm and one for Gauge 1. I've never run the two Gauge 1 locos I have in anger, and there is another in the offing.

Sadly it won't be this year as there's too much to do in the new house, but maybe next year??

Hi Brian,

That looks the same sort of length that we had to play with - you saw our temporary bridging section!

Just do it! You can have great fun with some mates, a couple of engines and a few yards of track.....and a local pub.

I have just checked the latest Marklin catalogue and post war mainline stock are only 75cm long, approximately 10% short. Kiss Modellbahnen also use this length for their green push-pull driving trailer.

However the latest Silberling coaches from Marklin are the correct length as are the Kiss E30 stock!

Does the BDüm-61 scale out at 26.4m (82.5cm) as it looks a tad short next to the AB4ü-38 Schürzenwagen?



I believe it's an AB4ü-38 Schürzenwagen built in 1938/9.

Aah, yep, you're right of course. I was looking at the picture on my phone, so not terribly large or clear. And perhaps a bit of wishful thinking on my part!

I have two pre WW2 coaches in my collection, this is the AB4ü-38 Schürzenwagen made by Marklin and is the correct length at 66cm

The Kiss Baggage Car is also the correct length at 66cm

Neither coach features in the latest catalogues from either company but they do appear on eBay from time to time.

Oh the folly of looking at Ebay! My rebuilt 01 181 now has a stable mate, Kiss Modellbahnen 01 202 an original West German machine but with a slightly modified front

As far as I'm concerned it was a bargain at a price cheaper than the Märklin version. At least the DCC system is compatible with NCE!
The real machine has survived and is a regular performer in Switzerland where it is based and Germany.

It looked so lonely on the shelf surrounded by BR Standard Tanks, a Britannia, a Castle etc. that it had to be liberated!!!!!!!!!!!!!




This model is a Kiss Modellbahnen Cl.65 2-8-4t. Built originally by the DB to replace the Cl.78 4-6-4t, the 65's only amounted to 18 in number.
65 018 survived in service until 1973 at Aschaffenburg working alongside the much older Cl.64 2-6-2t, today 65 018 is preserved and based in Rotterdam North and is a regular performer over the Dutch rail system.

Hi,

A bit of loco detailing help please.

We finally managed to get DCC in the garden - more of that in my garden railway thread - and of course had to have something to test continuity etc.

This was the magnificent beast chosen for the occasion:













The plea for help comes from both Roger and myself. If we want to change the identity of a locomotive - I'm really not sure I want an example in preservation ownership - where do we go for a replacement set of plates in gauge 1, a la Severn Mill or Guilplates. I don't know where to begin, and while Roger has had a look, he has drawn a blank. Can anyone point us in the right direction?

The guys in Germany I used to use have retired, but...

You might try Narrow Planet Custom etched products.

In any case check the font used for the plates matches the prototype; there are a variety of forms of 3,5,6 and 9 and variations on all the other characters. Just to add further variety the plates may not be the same style one any one loco...

there are quite a few companies in Germany that make either decals or etched number plates. Both variations were common.
Here is a short overview of the most reputated suppliers that have Gauge 1 plates:
