JLTRT 37 517 in Loadhaul, S7 & lots of detail.

Hi progress has been slow as I revised the etches a little and have been doing some other ones, not to mention hatching the ideas for a S7 Southern region late 1990s layout - more on that another time. I've been busily painting away the interior parts of the 37 so thought I'd show you the results. I think my paintbrush best sums up the job here. These parts are ultra small. I've seen the rubber seal around the AWS indicator is a tad smudged so I'll have to attend to that. Note to self - don't take photos of your modelling, it shows up the areas that need to be revisited.

That is cracking work Tom, but I don't see the sunflower on the AWS indicator ;)

What brand, type of paint & colour did you use for the body of the AWS indicator?

Regards

Thanks Dave,

The sunflower will be on it very soon:thumbs:

The AWS indicator was done with AK Interactive's acrylic green AK-032. I added a drop of Vallejo yellow and 'blue angles' to slightly adjust the colour until it looked right to my colourblind eyes.

I mixed up a wash using grey, blue and cream enamel. I'm trying to achieve that sort of greyish grime that lightly builds up inside cabs. As you can see I liberally applied a very thin wash (about 85% thinner vs 15% paint) over most of the bulkheads. Left to dry for about 5 minutes and worried thinking I should have done one at a time because it takes quite a while to stub the paint.

Anyway, I grabbed my flat brush, dipped in thinner and then wiped on kitchen towel so almost dry and started stubbing the paint, each time wiping the excess on the towel and repeating. After about 10 mins the bulkheads have taken on more depth and the high gloss is toned down. I'll leave to dry overnight and add some chips tomorrow.

Little update,

I've added some chips to the paintwork this evening and few rust spots under the conduit cable. The chips were done using Games Workshop bleached bone lightened with white and lightly dapped around. I also went over a few of them with dark grey so the chips look layered. CAB INTERIOR 1 SML.jpg
All micro dots but it's aimed to make the whole bulkhead look consistently weathered. I used AK Interactive's 'rubber tyre' paint for the window rubbers. This is a sort of dark grey colour and is far closer to rubber than plain black. The window rubbers would have probably jumped out a bit too much if I'd used straight black. It also works well on air pipes. Now just a little touching up to do, paint the ex-work conduit cables, and add the transfers. I'm hoping it's looking more like a 37 cab interior now?

Gareth - thanks for those. You know I don't actually know which cab goes at which end:oops:

Richard - Thanks, the transfer is from Martin, I've still got to add the other but am waiting to reprint on white transfer backed paper, did it on clear the first time - oops.

Even more progress with lots of little warning signs added. I think they're really bringing it to life and the painting/weathering so early on in the build is really stimulating my interest. I find my interest can often wonder with more complex builds where the finish seems so far away. Maybe I should introduce a spot of painting early on in my other builds...

When you "Martin" as the source of the transfers that does not mean a great deal to me. Could I have more details please as Iwould like some of those for mine.

Sorry Richard, I assumed you knew each other. Martin aka Pugsley on this forum. I should also mention that I printed them on crafty computer paper.

Like the bulkheads Tom - (I've still got some tube and brass chain for you btw) - I must get on and print the transfers for mine.
Have you offered them up to the cabs yet - I had to take off almost 2mm on each side of the bulkheads before they would fit...

Thanks Jon,

No, I've not tried yet. I'm still cutting 'n' shutting the cab side grills at the moment so haven't got the bulkheads near. I hope I don't have to do too much fettling but if you've have to remove 2mm off I can envisage what lays ahead. Are you going to Bristol?

A few mods done to the cab front bulkhead. I've annotated the pic below.
37 cab front bulkhead.jpg

1 - Remove the lip around the door frame in readiness for cab transfers.
2 - Drill hole for extra instrument that protrudes at an angle (what is is called??). I've made this from plastic square rod.
3 - Remove angle off this panel. All are like this to allowing for the windscreen washer motor.
4 - Filled in glazing with plastic strip
5 - Added 2 extra buttons from 0.6mm round rod.
6 - Removed 2 buttons.

Some of these are generic to class 37s, but other controls depends on the exact loco. So always work from photos, or at least photos of the sub type of 37 you're modelling.

That seems to be a slow speed speedometer, which covers 0-3mph, certainly on 37694. All of the refurbed locos seem to have gained that extra pod, although there isn't always a gauge in it - I've seen a photo of 37424 that has it plated.
