Hi Phill

It all gets a bit confusing, even when reading the book!
Without getting bogged down in it all tonight, it seems they were referred to as Utility Vans (Van U) by the SR although they were sometimes numbered in the CCT (Covered Carriage Truck) band. It appears they were known as CCT's by BR, no mention of PLV or GUV in the book. The even planked jobbies were built from 1925 as per Slaters info, most were withdrawn @1962 - 1964. Uneven planked came in 1937, plywood sided in 1951 and 1955.
In terms of the even planked versions, a couple of them made it to 1984, so it all depends on your modellers license  ;D
I'll see if I can dig out either some suitable numbers or any more defining info which may give a better idea of exactly which batch the model is based on.
Hope that helps rather than confuses too much...

Cheers Steve , any running numbers would be great.......especially vehicles that lasted into the late 60's/early  seventies..........but failing that my modellers licence has a pretty wide spectrum  ;) ;D :))

Hi Phill,

What you have is a GUV - later Covcar, Luggage and PMV.

According to Mike King's Southern Coaches book, the Even planked ones were to Diag 3101

Numbers 2023 - 72                    built by Midland RCW 03 - 05/28 Original batch
            2241 - 50, 2491 - 2500 built Ashford 02 - 04/33            Originally to Diag. 3102
            2251 - 80                    built Ashford 04 - 07/29
            2371 - 2460                built Ashford 04/31 - 02/32        Originally to Diag. 3102
the above were the GUV/Covcar examples

            1054 - 1250                built Ashford  04/35 - 04/37
            1251 - 1358                built Ashford 02 - 07/39
            1781 - 1820,2091 - 2170 built Lancing 08 - 12/42          Pressed steel sections
            1921 - 70                    built Ashford 10 - 12/38
            2181 - 2230                built Ashford 10/34 - 03/35
the above were the Luggage/PMv examples.

In BR ownership, the S prefix would have been applied, but as to Departmental numbering, you would need to go to  www.thedepartmentals.com website as that is a whole new minefield.

I have a set of instructions if you need one - send me a PM with your address.

Hope this helps

regards

Hi Phill,

just looked in David Gould's Souhern Railway Passenger Vans and he shows Diag 3101 - with the four vents, and giving numbers 2023-2072,2241-2280,2411-2460 & 2491-2500.

I'll take my anorak off now and start thinking about finishing the Q1 loco chassis.

regards

Mike

Thanks Mike :D,

I don't suppose you would know if any of the above would have survived into the early 70's, as I wish to paint it BR Blue to run in my parcels rake

Hi Phill,

the only one that I can see that lasted in non-departmental use into the 70's was 2492 and even that was withdrawn in March 1970. Most seemed to have survived in Departmental use, some as late as 89/90.

David Gould,s book - ISBN 0 85361 428 8 published by Oakwood Press has all of the details and can be obtained on the secondhand circuit fairly easily.

Let me know if there is anything else you need - I'll be doing my one as a Departmental - probably!!!

regards

Mike

Why not leave it green and just weather it ? I doubt they were repainted that often so a dirty green would not be that out of place

the withdrawal date sounds correct as the vast majority of pre-nationalization stock was withdrawn the the late 80's early 90's

The green it's in at present looks more like Departmental green to me Cynric ?..........I do intend to have the odd BR(SR) green MK1 mixed in with the blue/grey's though  8) & don't tell Rob, but the new Western is maroon  ;D :))

Full yellow panel?
I assumed that it was Southern region green  8) bit of dirt and you wouldnt know the difference  :)) I have a similar problem with another Fruit D i am working on bauxite or Blue? I cant find any decent shots of them working in the late 60's early 70's, but im guessing that bauxite is more likely

The Western is D1010 Western Campaigner in MSYP & I will run it like that this summer probably, but it will be going maroon full yellow panel next winter  8)
I would say bauxite for the Fruit D too.... the only blue box vans that I can remember in the 70's are the ex-Blue Spot vans. I will have a look in some of my books too
