LNWR parcel van

Hi John, Grahame,

yes, laser cut. My rather breathed-upon cheap and cheerful second-hand 40W CO2.

I’ll bat some tyre rings off in thinner card and see if it looks better

Hi Grahame

I did actually consider getting it laser cut.

As I may have mentioned before somewhere.....Oh! for a laser !!! Hahaha !

Strangely I happen to like the smell of a freshly cut model !!!! Weird or what ?

Anyway, I do quite enjoy using the Silhouette Cutter and it is a good way of trialing some builds that pop into my head.

I think there is another drawing John, rather than that dimensioned sketch. Lave it with me for a day. ...

I should add that I didn't paint my model - I know my limitations and it was done by Keith King, but here are some better pictures before it was painted.7mm horse parcels van parts.jpg 7mm horse parcels van back.jpg

Personally, I like the idea of a laser cut 4-wheeled parcels cart, particularly as it could be re-scaled (upwards please!). What drawing is that made to?

If you think that there were hundreds, built over a period of maybe 40 years, for use over a large part of the country where there were different conditions, then its not surprising there were detail differences.

In these pre-laser days the wheels were made from an offcut of brass tube left over from an LNWR small boilered 0-8-0. the spokes were square section brass soldered together on a rough cobbled together jig and then filed to approximate shape by hand.

John, whilst I'm looking for a drawing have you tried the LNWR Society? They have quite a good selection of horse drawn vehicle official drawings, albeit not the best quality prints. Think many of my prints came from them in the 1980s.

Having just glued the laser cut rims onto the spokes, I have even more admiration for that beautiful brasswork...

anyway, 6 off with 0.25 card glued either side of the 1mm greyboard, which I rather like, and 4 off with 1mm rims either side. These latter are too “heavy” IMO. Probably ok if they had been 3’ diameter and under a heavy dray or cart.

I might have a go at doing the spokes in 0.25 as well as the rims. That will be very light.

I’ll now go see what a GW delivery van looked like. I do hope they had 4’ wheels!

Hi Simon,

Great Western Road Vehicles by Philip J. Kelly is a useful reference.

Ta mate,

I’ve got it, and it was there that I turned just as soon as I put the iPad down...

Photos of the 2-wheel van looks very similar to the drawing at the head of this thread, but there is no drawing - I might do something “impressionist”. Model of LNWR, livery of GWR... :). There is a rather nice light 4-wheel van. Having found a method of making wheels with some confidence, the options for other horse-drawn vehicles open out rather nicely.

I have some other cunning plans rattling round in my head (there’s very little to stop them) so watch this (or an adjacent) space!

@simond I like those wheels. You've done a good job on those.

On Johns request I've just been looking at how to laser cut the wheels. When John made the request, I immediately said sure, but the spokes won't be round! Now I'm actually looking at cart wheels, they are a bit more than just round spindles supporting a rim.

I found this interesting picture and it looks as if the wheel has a sold rubber tyre.
