Hi Dave
I was wondering where I can get some S.E.C.R. coach kits for my 0-6-0t P class to pull, you have just answered my problem that is where my P class kit came from thanks.
By the way your coach looks very good.

Regards,

Paul.

Slide cover slips are very thin, and therefore very easily broken. Probably not suitable for stock that gets a reasonable amount of use, especially the larger windows used on BR stock..

I do think it is a shame that the PC/Mopok method of reproducing steel sheet covered carriage stock is not available. This would be easier now, I would guess, with modern printing technology. They produced a former of plastic, sides and roof all in one and then printed the sides on. Using a reasonably thick ink gives a good representation of the very thin steel that overlaid most "windows". I don't know what an 1/8th of an inch in 7mm is, but even the thinnest plastic sheet is going to be very difficult to give the same finish. This isn't a problem for those modelling wooden stock etc but the RTR manufacturer's still find it very difficult to get away from the halo affect of a window inserted into a side for the BR and later range of carriages.

I don't know what an 1/8th of an inch in 7mm is,
An 7mm scale inch is 0.5834mm

an eighth is therefore 73 microns, 0.073mm

I understand that tampo printing thicknesses are of the order of 20 microns. I believe screen printing is thicker, but not so sharp.

When the Javelins started running in Kent, I wondered if the bodies could be vac/blow formed from PET or PC, a bit like plastic pop bottles, with the intent of painting them on the inside, but got no further than wondering!

Hi Yorkshire Dave
Thank you so much for posting the 43 mins of Youtube footage that will be of great help to me, I am coming to the end of reading Mike King book Southern Coaches Survey Pre-Grouping and BR MK1 Stock with a section at the end on the BR MK1 Non Corridor Stock which interestingly in 1959 the Kenney Belle formation comprised of four ex-SECR 10-compartment seconds plus a Maunsell Thanet brake coach in the centre then from 1962-63 the stock changed to the MK1 coaches and a Maunsell Diagram 2113 brake and from1964 onwards the brake coach changed to Bulleid brakes either Diagrams 2124 or 2123 in 1964/65 my Dapol BR Standard 3t I purchased is unnumbered and the plan is to give it running number 82019 which is seen in the footage on the Kenney Belle service {this is looking good} as I have spoken to the chap at Easy Build and he can supply me with the kits to make up the Diagram 327 10 compartment Non Corridor MK1 coaches so I can include the one off BR Fibre Glass {IF THAT IS THE RIGHT WORDING FOR THE COACH} MK1 Non Corridor coach in the rake which had a white roof probably not for long though also I noticed that the coach stock varied between four and five coaches on the service.

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Paul.

Hi hmrspaul
Thank you for the image kind of reminded me of my driving days it was not in the steam days but with southwest trains and southwestern railway as it is now out of Waterloo or though I was based at Guildford Depot.

Regards,

Paul.

am coming to the end of reading Mike King book Southern Coaches Survey Pre-Grouping and BR MK1 Stock with a section at the end on the BR MK1 Non Corridor Stock which interestingly in 1959 the Kenney Belle formation comprised of four ex-SECR 10-compartment seconds plus a Maunsell Thanet brake coach in the centre

Thanet stock is produced by CRT kits Thanet Stock | S.R./B.R.(S) | 7mm scale locomotive and coach kits | CRT Kits. For the ex-SECR 10 compartment third you will be struggling as I don't think there are any kits available.

Incidentally the Thanet stock is the last built by the Southern with the British standard scissors gangways before they adopted the Pullman gangway for all subsequent corridor stock.

Hi Yorkshire Dave
I have been doing some searching via internet for the SECR 10 compartment coach kits and not found anything yet I do not think even Dave Hamersley at Roxey Mouldings does them, he was my first port of call as he does some SECR and LB&SCR rolling stock kits.

Hi Yorkshire Dave
I have found a Maunsell Brake Third with the guards compartment flush with the rest of the coach and no duckets.
The kit is Westdale and it has high windows I was wondering if it matters if the corridor side windows need to be the high or the low version as there are two diagram numbers ie 2103/2104,I am assuming one of the numbers refers to low windows and other to high?.

Hi Paul,

SR coaches to the uninitiated can take some working out. The diagram number refers to the coach layout rather than high or low windows, once you know it becomes quite easy :).

Diagrams 53, 165 and 317 are 1924/25 'Thanet' stock all built to restriction 1 (8'6'' wide). Diag 165 is the five compartment brake third with low windows.

SR coaching stock diagrams 2001 to 2656 were built between 1927 and 1934. The brake third coaches of interest are below:

Diag 2101 is a restriction 4 (9'0'' wide) four compartment brake third with low or high windows depending on the order number and when built.
Diag 2102 is a restriction 4 (9'0'' wide) six compartment brake third with low or high windows depending on the order number and when built.
Diag 2103 is a restriction 1 (8'6'' wide) four compartment brake third with low windows.
Diag 2104 is a restriction 1 (8'6'' wide) six compartment brake third with low or high windows depending on the order number and when built.
Diag 2105 is a restriction 0 (8'0'' wide) six compartment brake third with high windows.

As you may be aware SR coaching stock carried restrictions denoting the operating areas and routes based on the coach origin (LBSCR, SECR, LSWR and SR) and ability to fit within the respective route's loading gauge. In general:

Restriction 0 - 8'0'' wide - go anywhere - South Western, Central and South Eastern divisions including the Hastings line.
Restriction 1 - 8'6'' wide - go anywhere - South Western, Central and South Eastern divisions - except Hastings line.
Restriction 4 - 9'0'' wide - go anywhere - South Western, Central and South Eastern divisions - except Hastings line and other specified routes in the South Eastern division.

The Bluebell website provides a full description of all of the restrictions - Bluebell Railway - Carriage Technical Pages - Restrictions
