Peter's workbench. A Dukedog

I bought a partly built Dukedog, the fromes were ok but I decided to use three point compensation using the bogie pin as the point of the triangle with drivers on two drivers on side beams. The footplate was well made but the boiler smokebox and fire boxe were sitting wrongly. The cab also came off and was tidied up.

Here are a few pictures of the refitted boiler and frame inprovements.



I then did the tender frames and footplate, so the draw bar could be fitted and checked for clearence.




I have now gone back to adding the brass detailing the loco, Starting with the cab firebox, Smokebox and front will be next. The cover plates firebox bands and cleats. The cab roof, floor and handrails, blanks for the cab front, and the backhead was fitted but not fixed.





Finally the steps have been added.


That's brought you upto date. I am still trying to find out whether I need a plain or rivetted tender. The kit comes with a plain tender, but I do have some spare etches for the rivetted sides.

Thanks. I will not be going as far as inside motion with this one. The compensation seems to work well, it behaves much like a long 0-6-0.

The loco body is now ready for ahost of white metal castings. The frames just need the side beam mounts ajusting and that can be painted. I have made a start on the tender body I have forme the flares on the tank sides. I think progress will be slow this week as it is carnival here, so SWMBO is off work until Friday.

The tender has gone together quite quickly. Ithas all fitted well ezcept for two tank top supports that did not resemble the instructions, but with a little work fitted in.

First photo shows the basic body on the previously built footplate.



Next two after the beading and some of the front and rear detailing parts. As supplied the beading is a flat etch, I prefer half round materil but the coal plates and tank sides are half etched where the beading goes, so I ended up using 0.7mm wire.




The next show more front detailing including the front hand rails, and some of the white metal castings. Also the rear with vacuum pipe in place, the dome, and the water filler. Having thought the brass work was finished I see I notfitted the rear handrail. Good job tacking pictures show up all the faults and missed bits.

I think apart from a major clean up I am there with the build. There is a little weight to add, but painting is easier without it.

I have made a start with the last detailing a representation of the cab interior still a little to do.



With the rest of the castings handrails ect were added. Then it was down to the cranks, I had sort of been putting it off, I had bought some of Slaters new extended axles but they sent me S7 not F/S. I decided to use the etched kit ones. I made them up with crankpins ready to fit. The part I was mot looking forward to was fixing them square. In the end I came up with using a block of Balsa other hard wood would of probably been better, but dipped in water it worked well, not only keeping them square but all at the same spacing.

Now all fitted with a minimal amount of adjust ment all works well. Also somenice etch covers over the axle. I am now glad I went with these ones.




I have start to use a simple loop of wire to hold the motor steady, itseems to work well and is easier to build than some of the complicated ways I had come up with.

The kit is a Javelin one, which was with Gladiator. I do not know where it is now.

Gladiator still make a Dukedog kit, I believe it was from Javelin. I bought one at Rading in December '15.

They have new owners now and I am sure the Javelin was not part of the deal. Hopefully they are still being made.

I have been caught out. I thought I still had plenty of time to paint the Dukedag. But today postie brought me the number plates. So I suppose I ought to get some black paint out.

Here's a quick update on the Dukedog. It has now had a coat of black. A few bits need tidying up but whether it needs paint or just a light sanding we will find out.



I had a strange thing happen while painting I had water condensing on the outside of the airbrush, if I did not catch it on a tissue it would get sucked of the end of the brush into the spray.

















The smoke box and backhead need a bit more work and black paint required

Hopefully a little more will be done this week.

Today was first time in workshop this week I had about 4 hours which at the moment is great, So after playing with Pedro, feeding him, going for a walk and giving him a shower, I actually managed to take these pictures, nothing at all constructive, and SWMBO thinks I live in my room.

Now for the progress with the Dukedog. The tender is almost complete. Just a little bit of detailing and painting to do. The loco is ready for boiler bands and then it will be varnished the frames need pickups and then should be done. The bogie is finished, like the S15 it is a bit of a pain as the bogie needs to be on to do anything to the frames because it´s part of the compensation, but is best taken off to do the work to stop damage.















Not long now before it will be on it`s way to the UK. It should of been much earlier in the year but this year has conspired against most modelling.

I am now looking forward to the next project. this time will be from the LMS and a Southern tank.
