Never mind within earshot - being completely unaware of his animosity towards Scale7 I once asked him directly at an exhibition if he had any Scale7 wheelsets? I think if I remember correctly Slaters had just started to produce Scale7 wagon wheels. I thought he was having an apoplectic fit, so I beat a hasty retreat commenting that I was disappointed he didn't stock everything a modeller needed!

I got the Millard treatment in his shop. When I dipped my toe in 7mm scale some years ago I decided to trawl round the M25 from my business at Denham to visit Home of 0 Gauge. It was an excellent shop and I had a good look around, then approached PM at the counter and asked a few questions. All was going well until I brought up the subject of Scale7, which set off a diatribe which must have gone on for about ten minutes. It was a selling technique I had never come across before. I thought it might just be me but I subsequently heard from others that I have not been alone, and he does occasionally surface on the 7mm scale yahoo Group to carry on the good work.

He did offer to pay £1000 for anyone who would build a successful model of a Claughton in Scale7 with no compromises which would work - I presume he thinks the clearances around the cylinders/bogie wheels are too tight to work without compromise. So if anyone has a working Claughton in Scale7, there could be a nice Christmas gift for you.

I did , a long while back, have (not a 'Claughton' ) that exquisite S7 Webb 3-cylinder compound 'Apollo' in my hands at a LNW Society November dinner thanks to the late Peter Turville. Absolutely fantastic model with literally all the bells and whistles but, as Peter later told me, it's pulling power was virtually nil . A Claughton would be a tricky proposition in S7 but that said anybody seen the valve gear/slidebar/wheel clearance on a 1:1 Stanier Class 5 ?

Speaking of clearances reminded me of this shot I took last year at NVR, seems to be more than a little side play in that axle box me thinks!.

Enjoyed meeting everyone and buying cobweb catchers to add to my collection.

A few of my club members were there too, including Hughes, the plasticard coach builder, so more time spent chatting than spending, which isn't so bad I guess!

Had some bargains on the Haywood stand - is there a reason for that? Seemed quite happy to discount.

I had an enjoyable day at Reading. Went along with my pal Marc Smith - met a Thunderer on the way - spent a fair bit at the show - now a proud owner of a lovely Ixion Hudswell Clarke with sound - thanks to Tower Models! A book and some mags and a few odds and ends, bargain wagon etc etc

Phill asked about the western, sorry about phone photo, I got a decent look in the afternoon when it was quieter, and it does look the part, the valance body join worries me ( I think Micks pictures showed it much better) but it does look like a Western. Im not sure what the two other locos beneath it are as they are not Western region.



Good to see everyone at the meet, and im glad to say my bag got lighter as the day went on and it emptied. I went to the Peter cowling stand to buy some battery boxes, which turned out to be dining tables for a restaurant car

That class 40 does look rather good, I like the 'thin' effect of the windscreen framing, whilst I like 'making' models I might drop for one of these in split code style. Certainly looks a viable contender to the JLTRT example

Finally to stop the WR natives rioting and leading a revolt!

I think the valance join looks a little more hidden from my slightly downward angle, I did try and take a side shot of the Wezzie but the trader insisted of walking behind it every 3-4 seconds with his Hawaiian shirt on which foiled the cameras white balance, I gave up in the end and went to take photos elsewhere!

From what I've seen there's probably never been a less apt name for a model manufacturer...

But it was great to meet everyone again. The show seems to have gone well and there was plenty to see, even if I didn't actually stay as long as usual. I ended up buying a very lovely MMP Class 60 kit, which has proven to be complete, thank goodness!

And I much admired Dog Star's hat; loved the gnome impression Graham! Sorry I forgot my pipe, slippers and cardigan. Did remember the hat though.

But which one! I have an MMP 60 in the loft and they are a deceptively fiendishly complex piece of modelling LOL.

I bet you are glad that you started passing that bag around the WT meet... and one or two of us were brave enough to comment on the dinner plates stuck to the front of the "battery box".

Thank you for the early Krimble pressies (spelt like Wizzo, only different ) which helped to weigh down my bag on our return journey .

Still got my doubts about the HJ Wezzy, it will be interesting to see the Western once Brian Daniels has painted one...........but the 40 & 31 look good.
