Hi Ian,:)

Thanks for the kind words:oops::thumbs::)

I agree with you on 99.9% of what you have said. I like my SKYTREX Vans too:);)

A Farce? It was only one Post and I did post a pretty piccy:)) Just thought that I would share what I had heard from the horses' mouths - IMHHO. just a shame that SKYTREX couldnt have gone the extra mile and w/o being arrogant :) I was also fondly remembering Cynric's gentle, critique of my model vans.:)

Agreed let's get back to Ross' superb modelling - I would not want to p!ss anyone off:thumbs::bowdown:

It will be interesting to see Phill's and Ross' progress with these vehicles.

BTW no offence taken;)

Hi CME,

l love the weathering on your van. l hope i can weather mine as half as good as yours then i'll be happy.

I still need to look at the vans but the bodies do need fixing together and i will probably strengthen the corners like Ross has done.

Ross: what other mods are you looking at doing.?

Hi Frank, you've made a great job of them, I like the underframe detail on the 8 shoe variant. Think im definitely going to thin the V hangers down, also think ill drill out the pin holes on the brake bar or whatever its called? They are represented by little nodes at the mo, noticed CME had drilled them out on his.. excellent work and well worth the effort.

A big gap in any range of O gauge wagons are fitted LMS vans (how about it Parkside?) which were very common around the system until the early 70s. So I was pleased to see Skytrex produce such a van and a purchase was duly made. The underframe was nothing to write home about but with the addition of screw couplings and tie-bars (if Dapol can mould them on their N gauge Grain wagon why can't Skytrex do them in 7mm?) it ended up looking presentable.

However the later LMS vans had 8 shoe brakes and various additional strapping so I decided to do a bit of work to produce this;

Much of the underframe is from ABS parts and the strapping is plastikard. The close up is rather unkind. I still need to blacken the wheel treads. The really glaring defect with these vans is one that is noticeable whether whizzing around a large layout or parked in a siding and that is thet they have the wrong roof profile. Skytrex seem to have used the same ends as their BR vans (as do JTLRT) and so you don't get the impression of different profiles that is such a feature of steam era freights. I did think about using the ends from a Parkside unfitted van but that was a non starter. Anyone got any ideas on correcting the roof profilw?

Frank

JLTRT make a series of LMS vans. Those with a corrugated end also need the diagonal strapping added for the usual appearance on BR (they do have a photo in their instructions of one which doesn't have this). They only do the Morton UF - providing full post 1957 Vacuum brake rigging. I was pleased with the plank ended Diag 2088 I made up.

I agree with Frank, those LMS vans are really good looking vehicles and I'd love to have a few 1/32 examples, the corrugations are the difficult thing to master/create from scratch. I've got the clasp brake gear sorted though!

Apologies for thread hijack Ross, I look forward to seeing developments with your vans. I thought making sure they were properly put together at the corners cured the one thing that I'd noticed about them before your thread started:thumbs:

I'd be delighted to be able to get hold of stuff of equivalent quality and usefulness to your Skytrex in 1/32 scale!

Hi, today ive cut down the 'V' hangers so they are only about 2mm in depth now, still too thick but a lot more pleasing to the eye. Also put some better couplings on 'parkside dundas' they are a lot thicker brass and don't slop about in the drawbar slot.. going to drill out the pin holes in the brake handle slot thingy tomorrow and put some more pictures on as they tell a 1000 words.

You going to put some brass tube between the Hangers

Yes, I'm going to drill the V hangers and brake gear, then slide some brass or plastic rod right the way through. Also ill refit the arm to the vacuum cylinder drilling thro that too and sliding the rod thro it as the arm was just glued onto the rod between both sides of the brake hangers and looked crap IMHO..

Hi Ross:)

I forgot to ask, how did you go about fettling those 'V' Hangers, what tools did you use?:oops::)

Kind regards,

CME:)

Hi CME, basically I used a sharp scalpel blade in my craft knife to temporarily remove the brake handle from the ends of the V hangers then attacked the V hangers with my X-Acto razor saw cutting from the bottom of the V hanger down to the solebar, I then had to get in from the back with the saw to cut the rest away. All sounds a bit rough but once you've cleaned it all up with edge of scalpel blade and needle files it all looks ok...

Not yet that man we will lul them into a false sense of security then like a coiled spring get you and the sarge to bombard them with your stones, then Lancer ,Ross and Phill can amuse them with their whit (that should take all of 2 seconds) then I will slip round the back and nick their rivet press

Just remember that some of us are not making any jokes about or posting negative comments on the use of Skytrex products. The BB are entitled to use whatever models they wish and if there is a desire to improve the accuracy or quality or reliability of such models then that is to be applauded - even more so when the method and result is offered here.

Of course I do mean Blue Brigade in the above paragraph - I doubt that Brigette Bardot reads WT, although Simon "Da Shop" might be getting excited about Bristols.

regards, Graham
