Hello All
Finally I soldered the boiler to the firebox, it looks like it should do and is the correct length.
I offered up the boiler to the footplate and the front of the firebox goes up against the rear splasher and found gap between the cab and the rear of the firebox.
Perhaps I should just bog it up with something.

Well actually back to the drawing and the footplate is to long, should be 33 ft 4.5 inches or roughly or approx 233,5mm, well it is 238 and I put the cab front with the tabs in the etched holes in the foot plate assuming this was going to be my datum.
So now I have to take off the cab, cut down the footplate and resolder it.
Fact is the footplate is longer than the chassis.

I really wish I had a crystal ball sometimes as you build and ad components only to find that they are incorrectly positioned.

I must admit ,I am no expert, just an average bloke with a few skills in soldering, gluing, screwing and some bodging and sometimes I come away from building things like this feeling is it me, am I just obtuse,.
But this is not going to beat me.

I have not known anyone else who has completed the kit although have seen a few images of them, just a pity I couldn't speak to them first as surely they had the same problems I am going through.

It would be really nice to think I could scratch build but I can't so I think I use the kit as a basic set of parts that I treat with care questioning are they correct

You are doing a grand job. Some of William's ideas are odd. I have learnt with his kits that things are check and re checked before soldering. I am in the process of building a S15 from him. Which like yours and the others I have built, need a lot of builder input to make a lovely model.

Peter, it just frustrates me that I buy a kit that I virtually need to modify to build.

I guess RTR has some merits, ie what you see is what you get.

Don't forget the L1..

Not quite as bad in the design perhaps, but enough of it got thrown away to be in the same league..

The the L1 was hard and again the attitude of well its got mistakes and they will figure it out.
Pity Connoissuer dropped the N7, fynny if I went to ikea and bought a cupboard that didnt fit together there would be an uproar yet we buy loco kits and are almost apologetic about t

Hi Steve,

Are you a member of the Gauge O Guild? If you are there is a member called Brian Bartholomew (the gent that builds gresley coaches from real wood), he has built one and it looks superb. One this he pointed out to me when I mentioned that I had one was that you need to cut the footplate for the cylinders and there is no provision for it in the the kit.

Steve,
Correcting some one else's lack of skill in producing a kit is a skill in it's self, keep going mate and you will end up with a model you will be proud of produced by your own hands  with absolutely no help from the kit designer.

Personally I wouldn't have the front to turn up at exhibitions knowing that what I was selling as a kit was really a load of crap.

With much fettling, and bodging and deciding my gut instinct is better than the instructions here is the story so far.
I am now cutting the back of the splashers, the dome is wrong, it ist a lead sinker, anyway I am getting a lower dome for it
The footplate is to long so will need to cut it down at the cab end.
Why the basics are out I don't know.
This is a great learning curve if nothing elseC1 embroyonic loco.JPG

Thanks Tony, there have been times when I wanted to simply dump it. In Sydney Harbour.
It is difficult because the instructions are really bad and I think this kit would be lifted into a higher level simply by provide builder friendly idiot proof instructions.
I think I whilst it often has frustrated me so much so that I left it for a year I think I will see it as a learning curve to becoming more proficient.

Regards Steve

I'd certainly be happy to come over and help you with the harbour bit! Yes, you certainty learn a lot more with a challenging kit, that's for sure. The Altantic is a lovely looking engine to model.

Tony
