Telford 2015

Over the weekend it was good to meet Simon, Neil, Martyn (3 Link), Mike (Makis), John from the Hospital Gates team (Rippers was busy, so I didn't get chance to speak) Dave Hill (the new Mr Gladiator) as well as many familiar faces.

I bumped into that many people that I only managed a few photos.

The first three I am embarrassed to say, I can't even recall the name of the layout but the wagon turntable caught my eye. What struck me as a bit odd on this layout was that all the stock that I saw while I was watching (admittedly not very long) was pre 1948 but one of the very nice buildings had a couple of air conditioning units attached to it which looked really out of place.....

And then Hospital Gates - or a tiny part of it.

Telford was my first Gauge O Guild event (I'm more into the smaller scales) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was struck by the relaxed atmosphere and how very friendly the event was, especially considering the size of the show. It was good meet up with Thunderers who previously I'd only known through posts on the forum. Saturday was very busy on the Casten's Reading Solutions stand; curry and beers in Bridgnorth, in excellent company, being an excellent way to wind down. Sunday was less frenetic and I managed to wander round the show some more though I'm fairly sure that I may have missed some bits. All in all a brilliant weekend.

Quite the most enjoyable Telford for us... could only have been bettered if the England - Czech game had been on Saturday rather than Monday. The Summit and Heyside took joint honours in my view, both just ooze atmosphere.

The two days just flew past... lots of talking to peeps about modelling in general, lots of good advice and suggestions received to help with the GWR carriage and some of our EZ builds. The Heljan Cargowaggons look very nice, are we glad that we pre-ordered several when the asking was under £150.

Buzz Models kind of persuaded us that we really did want to build his new FNA kit... even thought there are no instructions as yet. This wagon needs 2'8" diameter wheels with disk brakes - available from Peartree for 0FS and not yet for S7, something about not enough demand!!!!

The price of paint is frightening - we bought a couple of track colours, some blue, grey, olive drab and black.... with thinners and that lot was over £50.

As I said I was quite taken by the wagon turntable in the first of my photos above.

The next question is what diameter would it be? - My rough estimate from the photo is approx 3 times the track width so around 96mm or 13' 8" does this sound reasonable or does anyone have a definitive diameter for an actual example?

Many thanks.

I have some excellent 7mm plans somewhere for a GER wagon turntable taken from an early 70's Model Railways magazine I think. Any use, Rob? Might take me a while to dig it out though.

Alternatively you might find the same plan on the GER Society's website from where plans can be downloaded (credit to the Society for making this service available - so much stuff is hoarded away in archives yet not accessible, yes I know it all takes effort….).

Thanks Tony,

I will have a look and come back to you if I can't find anything.
PS it was good to briefly chat to you on Sunday:thumbs:

It looks like the GER society website is down at the moment, but a quick Google search has pointed me at GER Journal no 93 which I have. And it seems to have all that I might desire on the subject, so thanks again for the pointer Tony:thumbs:

It was good to see you Rob. I'm glad you enjoyed the layout. Regards, John.

I've just found the article Rob - by Roger Farrant in Model Railways April 1973. Drawing is to 1/32 with locking detail at 1/12, drawing copyright is with LNER Society.

A belated contribution from me.

That was my first ever Guildex and I was thoroughly impressed. Excellent organisation from start to finish and a welcoming and relaxed feel to the whole thing, which is no mean feat considering the size and complexity of the whole event.

Great to meet lots of Thunderers, many for the first time, in order of "appearance" they included Rob Pulham, Mike Cole (Ressaldar), Barry (Lankytank), Tony (Osgood), Heather, Phill Dyson, Ross, Rob Riley (Lancer) and Mickoo, a real pleasure in all cases.

Neil and I joined the Hydraulic "mafia" on Saturday night for a curry in Bridgnorth and beer on the station, very enjoyable.

A real personal highlight was using my new "pop up" displays for the first ever time, one of which features a wonderfully atmospheric picture taken by Old Ravendale (Brian Dale) on the very last day of steam on the Southern Region. I first saw the picture when Brian posted it up on WT, and here is the estimable Mr Dale senior standing next to his glorious image:bowdown:

Thank you very much Brian.

Many thanks to all the organisers and very many thanks also to Neil for your company and huge assistance over the weekend, together with a spiffing sneaked couple of days in the Welsh sunshine afterwards.

Ross pointed that out to me, just as I was about to tell him !!!. Apart from that, it was a nice layout.

I think the layout with the apparently anachronistic air conditioning was Rushen Valley. It is billed in the guide as a fictitious preserved railway, so air con isn't so out of place if it's set in the present.

Thanks Heather,
In that context it makes sense and is a nice touch. It certainly creates a talking point.

The Headquarters building on WW2 U.S. heavy bomber airfields in East Anglia had air conditioning (the building was designed to be fully sealed) - I wonder when aircon first became available to the civilian householder?

I didn't look at the railways at Telford, but the attempts I have seen at modelling preserved railways fall far short.... the prototype needs observing as much as any model railway.....running anything & everything as on the ones I have seen simply does not cut it for me :)

Not posted anything for quite some time but thought that i would just mention that i too enjoyed Telford show.

Great to meet Simon and Neil for the first time. Really nice guys. They seemed to enjoy the "hydraulic mafia " curry , beer and banter night.

PS , Simon i am already on the motorail mk2 project and look forward to seeing a motorail service on your garden railway.

I bought a Dapol Terrier in LBSCR livery- incredible vale at £140 but you have to be a member of their club. There are one or two things to put right - some of the fittings are a bit askew but it is truly impressive. I've ordered another in BR black but with sound, as the LBSCR one will be showcase only - but then, thinking about it maybe it should be a station pilot a la the Liverpool Street and Newcastle pilots and Brighton Works loco.

I also bought a wooden transport box for the A3. The loco is so long and heavy it won't fit in to a conventional large card box easily - I've been happy with these previously and will continue to use them for most builds. However, help needed here (and I've looked at the Show Guide which is no help) - who would the manufacturer be? It's not Parkwood nor SM Models. He was approximately where Dapol were supposed to be in the same hall as Heyside. Those who were there will know that some of the stands in this hall were moved around compared with the layout shown in the programme. Unfortunately the box is not branded. Photos can be supplied if that would help in the identification. It's a good box with a foam liner and I may want more for other similar large and heavy locos.

Other than that a jar of metal black from Hobby Holidays and some BR green enamel spray paint for the production of boiler bands together with a Bob Moore large pen tip, Evo Stick Contact Adhesive and Microscale Crystal Clear and I was done.

All in all a great couple of days and I actually resisted buying any kits this year - first time ever, I think.
