The Chronicles of Canary Sidings - the Tale of an Untidy Workbench

Awesome! Need to remember that logic. In theory that means I could justify use of a multitude of liveries given today's conversation.

Sinclair pea green
Johnson green
Adams black
Johnson ochre (used on W and T7 classes)
Cream used on a couple of the W classes
Plumb used on no74
Sky blue used on the L&BR locos or at least the livery they would have been carrying when they were absorbed.....

Pitty there is no red livery otherwise I could have had the full rainbow!

It's been a month since the last post on this thread and precious little has been done up till very recently

This is due to 2 weeks spent touring Scotland, working all hours and the last piece of the building works comming to fruition.

That last point has had an impact on the modelling in a positive way as I've finally be able to move the work bench, Mucklemouth and all the parafanalia into the new purpose built office/den. This was completed as part of our kitchen rebuild last year but due to it needing to function as other rooms whist we finished work on the rest of the house so I've finally moved in

So I've gone from this:
IMG_20230709_090323143_HDR.jpg

To this:IMG_20230718_204341712.jpg

The new space is a whopping 7m long 2.5m wide at in the middle and 1.5m wide at its narrowest
So an odd shape not really useful for anything apart from a desk or two and possibly a train set.

But enough of that I should update you on modelling progress instead.....

So....

Before I went away I was considering possibly modelling the GER in the 1870s. Although I didn't do any modelling in Scotland I did get some thinking and planning done

Until this project came along I hadn't really strayed earlier than 1890 with much of my stock suiting a post 1900 layout. Afterall the last layout in 00 gauge was set in 1912.

But the more I look into it the more I like the idea. On the GER the 1870s was a chaotic decade with 3 different loco superintendents and many varying machines from earlier years as well. So the plan is to build up a separate fleet so I can change eras on the layout when it suits me.

First job obviously is to continue with the single wheeler.

When I built it I had made a fictional 1880s Bromley style smokebox. To try and merge this model in with my earlier fleet.

But this had to go

IMG_20230720_070719858.jpg

Ah the beauty of solder

IMG_20230721_174503050_HDR.jpg
Next I made a new wingplate for the front in the Johnson style

IMG_20230721_174540039_HDR.jpg

IMG_20230722_115059413_HDR.jpg

And have replaced the door with a new hinge in the earlier style

IMG_20230722_115121922_HDR.jpg
Balanced the chimney in place just to give you the effect.

If you hadn't realised how tiny this loco is here it is next to my rescued Thompson L1. Weirdly the tops of the chimneys are the same height

And having seen the drawing, the dome is pretty impressive in size as well! The little spinner is coming on well George!

Nice to see a stash of aircraft kits lurking in the background though. You’re not alone …

Richard
Yeah.... Those and the pile of unfinished Warhammer plus the pile of unfinished or unconverted 4mm rolling stock....

Up to now all that stuff was scattered around the house in various places so I could kid myself that there wasn't a problem. It was a shock putting it all in one room.... At 32 years on this planet I seem to have allready hit the SABLE (stock acquired beyond lifetime expectancy) point..... Particularly as most of the modelling I've done in the last few years is scratch building.... The pile is not getting any smaller....

Maybe it's time for a clear out.....

Well just for you Nigel here are some photos of the dome and safety valves loosely in place. You get the idea at least

IMG_20230724_181954365.jpg

After much filing I've still got an air gap under the ends of the wing plate but I'm hoping the securing bracket will hide that

IMG_20230724_181941850.jpg
Although it does look really bad from this angle that's cos the screw attaching smokebox to footplate isn't in place at the moment.... Really should just solder the box in place...

So another little job done over the last day or so is the boiler support bracket. Hidden neatly between front spring and sandbox

IMG_20230728_073857363_HDR.jpg

By accident I had allready soldered the boiler barrel in place so the bracket had to go in in 2 halves

IMG_20230728_073914824_HDR.jpg

Talking of little jobs.... The to do list is slowly getting crossed off

So the final item to go in the cab....
IMG_20230812_184550338.jpg

Yep it's the firebox door. And yes I've left it open. Currently the firebox is an empty void as it is where I had originally planned to put the motor.... See earlier post. However that got moved to the tender and I haven't as yet packed it full of weight.... Should I put a flickering amber led in there whilst I'm about it?

IMG_20230812_162323435.jpg

Next job is soldering up these little widgets.... Heres the jig.

IMG_20230812_184556927_HDR.jpg

And here is all 12 of them made up
... Can you guess what they are for?

Herb Garden

So back on the tender...

It too has had its axelbox retainers fitted.

IMG_20230817_070758316.jpg

And very importantly the rear spray and winkle coupling and safety chains

IMG_20230817_070808312.jpg

We've now got to a stage where the loco and tender body need a jolly good scrub to get all the flux and muck off before the boiler fittings are glued on and the body parts go to paint

There still some minor issues to fix with the chassis before that can get fixed and we can break out the plum colour....
