Weathered Locos & Stock

Thanks Steve.
I love recreating that look.
The RTR stuff is tricky though (high end and mid-range) as often - to me - they’re over oiled and it can be very hard to get paint to stick .

How do you get that look is there a danger of it impeding the running of the loco?

If its the motion that has oil on it then a wipe over with IPA should fix it . If its too smooth a quick rub with some fine wet/dry paper around 400g will abrade it enough to give the paint something to grab on to .
I use W/D because i have plenty of it up to 3000g but fine emery would do the trick as well

I’ve never known it be an issue for/with running Steve.

Thanks Paul,
I’ve used IPA, but still found the oil leeches out after and there’s only so far I can go doing it before I have to push on.
I should probably be more patient/thorough.

I saw 34066 in the flesh today on the Finney 7 stand. Looked absolutely stunning!

Not sure about the blue thing above it though...

(Sorry didn't get time to chat, you caught me as I was just heading up to do my presentation)
Thanks Chris.
It’s a truly lovely model - and a pleasure to work on.
No worries re a chat.
Your buildings are absolutely stunning! Great to see them first hand.

You're running a business and you really can't wait for the oil to stop leeching out . What do you use on the rods and motion ? I've been using AK & MIG engine oil on the rods but the motion has me stumped for something that looks right .

Hi Paul,
Depending on how grubby they are, it’s quite a mix, and a few layers.
If grubby, I start with an airbrush coat that’s generally the same as the chassis and wheel ‘key coat’.
I then apply various oil colours of Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, studying pictures as I apply these colours in varying degrees.
Finally, once it’s all dry and hard, I use Artists W&N Liquin Original to give the rods, particularly slide bars, crosshead, bosses, etc an oily sheen.
Hope that’s useful.
Neil.

Thanks for the info Neil . I've steered clear of using oils etc on the motion figuring it would gum up the works , apparently not . I will look up the W&N Liquin Original , A to see what it is and B to see if it's available in Australia .

I’ve just completed the weathering work on this first gen. Heljan Hymek.
It’s taken a lot of work to get it to this point (never complete) and in many ways it slightly irks me that these effects have been created mainly on top of an RTR paint job, rather than through, but hopefully the look stands up.IMG_3248.jpegIMG_3253.jpegIMG_3252.jpegIMG_3244.jpegIMG_3247.jpegIMG_3251.jpeg

Your comment suggests that your preferred way of achieving this superb result is to not have a RTR finish as the starting point... if that is correct then can you tell us why?
