Large prairie 6169 at rest on one of the loco spurs. She will have been coaled and watered on arrival, the crew would have cleaned the fire and turned her, ready for the return working after a short lay over. Time now for a trip to the mess room to fill the tea can.

I use the same, though in aerosol form to spray the trackbed. Good basis for the subsequent weathering.

Hi Mike - a lovely photo of one of my favourite locos, and a superb little layout. I have fond memories of building (and kit-bashing) the 4mm-version Airfix kit back in my schooldays. I saw the real 51218 on a shed-bashing trip to Shrewsbury mpd in September 1963. As she was a Swansea East Dock loco at the time I speculate that she was en route to or from Horwich for some kind of attention. Odd, though, as she was withdrawn from service only a year later.
I cannot help but wonder, from your nom-de-plume, whether you have any connection with the Quintus who contributed to the Images of Steam (by the "Fenman" group) book back in the late 1960s? It's been a longstanding element of my railway library!

Although allocated to Swansea East Dock from Bristol Barrow Road from about November 62, It was found to be in a poor state so was sent to Horwich for repair and only arrived in Swansea in late September 63. It was, as you surmise, probably on its way to its new home when you observed it in Shrewsbury.
It was intended as a replacement for the life-expired ex-Cardiff Railway 1338 but after arrival in Swansea, 51218 seems to have spent its time lurking in the back of the shed or parked on a siding. I have never seen a photo of it in steam and/or working at Swansea.

On a great days spotting at 82e, or Bristol barrow rd, I sat and ate my (jam) sandwiches in a gently simmering 51218's warm cab. 82e was not an easy shed to 'bash' but my mates dad was shed manager!

I also have an old Airfix kit bashed version, seen here on my Cwm Caradoc layout. It is EM gauge with a little sagami can motor between the frames, and a rocking front axle. She is a very good runner, but doesn't get out much! The old P.O. coal wagon looks as if it's had a rough shunt, fairly prototypical I would think.
No connection with the "Fenman" group, but I have the excellent "Images of steam" in my collection.
