7mm Fettling Madness (If it ain't broke - fix it!)

Hello dear reader.

Progress on the 47 is intense (for me). I'd post pics but they'd be of cut down screws and cab interiors in primer... ...boring?

Meanwhile my mind churns with thoughts of scratch building mayhem... ...the planned class 104 'tin can'.
1. Construction will be brass - ideas on thickness for the sides/cabs/ends most welcome?
2. Drawings from PDH are ordered and I have 60 odd images (inside and out) of the 2 vehicles.
3. Cab roofs... ...plasticard formed to shape? Any ideas?
4. Castings for underframe/bogies - Easybuild? Any other sources?
5. Window frames - I plan to cut out the window openings and (hopefully) overlay etchings (mk1 size? DMU size?) maybe the drawings will clarify?
6. Oh and it will of course be all blue!

Any thought ideas most welcome...

Thanks and regards

Stu
Stu,
With that lot the most obvious time-saver I can think of is to bin the drawings. This forum is littered with tales of woe and misdirection from using their lamentable illustrations.
I'm not entirely sure of the alternatives, but there must be something else out there, surely?
Otherwise, the construction methods you suggest sound great. Are you intending to hand cut or etch the sides?

I nearly dropped for the 31 a few months back but the Heljan model looks pretty good from what I saw, I'm no Class 31 expert and I'm sure they will point out the flaws but if they are acceptable to me, I'll have one and probably one of their 40s as well.

Class 47 images added to my Dropbox thread.

We will find out shortly Mick, I am hoping my 31 arrives tomorrow if not Tower tell me it will be MOnday.

I will post some pictures when it arrives.

Thanks Steph.

'Lamentable' is not a positive word. :( I'll see what I get! I actually ordered the Class 100 to 108 book of drawings (£13.99 IIRC) - we'll see!

I'll be hand cutting openings using a coping saw from Axminster tools with a fine blade. Any ideas on sizes etc...?

I am considering using nickle silver sheet as I came across this building the 08 and it's so nice to work with but I imagine it will need support strips ?

Thanks and regards

You will need a piecing saw to cut this sheet brass, lots of fine blades as you will break lots of them to begin with.
I'm tempted to say that it would be easier to draw the art work to get the sides etched than try and cut it out.

Thanks Richard, I'll look at the piercing saw options. Etching would be the best option but I'm trying to keep down costs as much as possible - it sounds expensive and I want this to be a 'background project' with minimal cost!

As far as the drawings are concerned I think I might get by on frequent references to photo's and 'good guestimates' based on known measurements and a cross reference (like measuring a building based on the known size of a brick)

I can see problems with correct profiling of curves however!!!!!

I have two, both untouched.
One came from Tower, one from ebay. Rare as hen's teeth now.......
I've seen a couple of those Tower Warships on ebay during the last year and a half or so. I bid on one but it went WAY past my budget - sounds like the one Daifly won (lucky bugger). I'm happy with my NP version though and will take it out of the (original!) box when I've got a few wagons under my belt.

Make no wonder those Warships are hard to get hold of with all these untouched kits sitting around:rolleyes:.............I'm sure one will come out in either Kit or RTR though as their is a real gap in the market for a good one:)

I keep toying with the idea of selling all my kits, I just can't build up the enthusiasm to even START one, let alone finish one, do a build, etc........
Two Warships, MMP Classes 31/0, 56, 58, 08, Impetus 97/651, MMP 03 x2, MMP 07, (Part built), Andrews Peppercorn A1, Finney A3 with GNR tender........

Quite a cupboard full.

If your serious I'll take a Warship, 58 and 08 off your hands for a fair price.
