Getting back to the layout .........
you said you were buying some timber any action yet? :D

If you are referring to me, then the timber was delivered yesterday - supposedly to 'customers cutting list' but obviously a Friday job and instead of being 1200 long pieces they were just cut from the sheet @ 1220! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: A pain in the butt, but managable to adjust, at least the pieces are not UNDER sized.

So visiting Aunty and Uncle today, gardening with SWMBO tomorrow - weather permitting and then into the workshop on Monday - watch this space for some pictures.

Mike

ps sorry to get back on to the topic.

Given a bit of time today I hope to do a few experiments with some ply to see what I can do. I must remember to keep it simple!!

In theory, you need another diagonal in the middle third. In practice, you probably won't!

If your baseboards are solid top, then you do not need the double ply sandwich. I built some this way, and Barry Norman held one upright on the floor, with his feet on the end, and tried twisting the board (with my consent!) and was surprised to see how rigid the construction was, and how much lighter for having less wood in it, plus ease of construction.

Hi Simon,

thanks for the input.

The previous version had the diagonal in the centre but I then thought that as the outer diagonals were opposing each other then there was no need. The top is solid - again 9mm ply, I'll give the sandwich idea some more thought over the week-end before comitting to construction.

As I said, in theory the middle section could still be subect to twist (in theory) but in practice, you will probably be OK.

Is this designed to be exhibitable? If not, the extra diagonal is probably not required, but if yes, it is worth considering.

I found with 9mm ply sides and ends, I could use 6mm tops without difficult: joins were screwed and glued, with blocks of 2" square in the corners.

Hi Mike

This is the framing for one of the Heyside fiddle yard boards, 7'3'' by 2'9''. It is all 9mm ply as is the top, all glued and screwed, handholds, wiring holes and leg pockets. Very simple but seemingly very sturdy. I guess only time will tell!

Hi Simon & Richard,

many thanks for the responses. As you both point out, a single 9mm side should be sufficient, especially as it will remain in-situ, except for maintainence purposes. It will be resting on a 2x2 frame which will be plugged and screwed to the back and one side wall and on legs along the front elevation, thus maintaining a 'basic' access underneath and the inter board connections will be overcentre catches.

The solid top will prevent the boards from forming any sort of lozenge shape. The diagonals you propose (one at each end, in opposite directions) should prevent twist.

Not just a saving in wood, but also in weight!

I have spent a little time this afternoon looking at building and eggbox a la brilliant baseboards http://www.brilliant-baseboards.co.uk/ as long as I can get the slots to be a good fit with the router and a template it could be a good solution. I like the idea of just 2 basic parts that are repeated which should make production easier. I have yet to work out how I will make the curved sections.....

Personally, I think they use twice as much wood as is necessary, based on experience of a variety of baseboards built over the years, but more importantly, the concept works because they are precision machined on a CNC: this level of accuracy is vital otherwise you won't be able to assemble the frames.

I favour an open top approach to the baseboard construction, but you have a fair point about the accuracy, i like to think I could achieve sufficient accuracy with the equipment at my disposal  I had seen the Rmweb post, the highlight for me was the obligatory 'my carpentry isnt that good so its off-putting to beginners' comment
The other possibility is to use T section ply beams which I may look at tonight. anyway its a pleasant diversion from track diagrams

Hi guys,

following further thoughts and sketches with the layout design I have come up with this:

[attachment=0:eek:ga4nhta]Bourne CCE schematic electrical layout 15.09.10.jpg[/attachment:eek:ga4nhta]

yet another (slight) variation on a theme but one that I think will lend itself to one man DCC operation, whether it is as a Parcels Depot or a CCE Depot - an excuse for two lots of rolling stock    or even, be with some very minor adjustments, the ubiquitous 'SR/WR Country terminal'. The green track would go to a (portable) fiddle yard if I could persuade SWMBO to let me put a hole through the end of the garage - so long as I can guarantee that I will not harm the Eleagnus that is growing there!

The support work for the layout has been constructed and will be erected over the weekend and a start will be made tomorrow on the boards themselves.

regards

Mike

Sounds like an excellent idea to me Mike  ..............possible garden railway perhaps ?. The more I read about DCC on 'Western Thunder' though.....the more confused I'm getting (not difficult I know)
